I think he's just trying to drum up a little drama. If LSU wins out they are in the BCS championship game. If anyone jumps them the SEC may secede...again.
fowler does have a vote in the AP poll, so he may have talked to other voters who might have said "oh, one more close call, we're moving them down," etc... but the fact of the matter is that his vote means jack-****, b/c the AP poll means nothing for what LSU is trying to accomplish.
LSU is definitely in the title game if we win out, even if the final 3 games take overtimes in each to win them. Kansas will probably pass us in the end if they remain undefeated. They would be #1 in ALL computer polls, and would have to just get "close" to us in the computer polls to take over. Missouri has the next best chance to surpass us because they play Kansas and OU, and would benefit greatly in the computer polls. It would probably end up with LSU still ahead of them in the computer polls, but it would be fairly close. Missouri would have to surpass LSU in the human polls, something I doubt would happen. LSU's margin of victory over their last 3 games would dictate that chance. OU has absolutely no chance at surpassing LSU. Their computer polls are still suffering and can only get significant help from the Kansas/Missouri winner.
Despite the close games, LSU has played twice as many ranked teams as any other serious contender. Expect the games to be closer than those teams who play unrankd teams. Voters know this. They have been wanting to put LSU back at #1 even after the loss to Kentucky, but it's hard to argue with ignoring that one loss when an undefeated Ohio State is staring back at you. In a year when so many top teams have lost, LSU has by far shown the most consistency, even if they haven't really been consistent.
A paid journalist? Drum up drama? Noooo.......... well, maybe just a little, but only on days that end with a Y.
