He didn't forget how to coach but I guarantee you Mathieu, Taylor, Claiborne, Brooks, Reid, and Simon, along with Minter in the middle, Logan, Brockers, Mingo, Montgomery, and etc etc played the 2 deep to perfection. We got pressure, our corners and safeties played flawless at times and could cover anyone, and Minter controlled the middle. We don't have those guys.
When we had two top-3 defenses in a row everybody was singing Chiefs praises and naming their children after him. So now we lose one close game on the road and he's suddenly Lou Tepper? Get real folks. The man knows his business and when he's got the players he fields top defenses.
If Chavis was the problem, maybe I would feel better than what I think the real problem is. IMO, the real problem is I don't see talent on this defense. I don't see playmakers. Two years ago we had a very young defense, but tons of playmaking ability and talent. Yeah, I see inexperience, but I don't see talented inexperience. Who are the young, talented future stars on this defense?? Are they sitting on the bench somewhere because it seems to me that if teams double Freak Johnson they've taken out the only playmaker we have. I hope I'm wrong.
I see talent, Hunter, Kwon, Freak and Ego, White, Robinson all are talented, Beckwith, and then you got all the guys that don't play yet...
The same thing happened with "starters" last year..............to put it in perspective, it is why LSU did not play for the National Championship even with a marginal performing QB.
True. Our biggest problem is the end of games this year--and it was our biggest problem last year. With a hoard of guys who are NFL players/starters this year.
I see losing 8 starters as a reason for the loss to UGA. We were dominated on defense all game long. Not Ole Miss though. When things are trending, they do so for a reason. Maybe opposing offenses figure out his defense in the 4th quarter. Maybe our players as gassed at the end of the game. Either way, coaches are paid to make the appropriate adjustments needed to win. That's what made our 2007 & 2011 team so dangerous. They dominated teams in the 2nd halves. Chavis needs to put some more hours in figuring out the problem. When he has a reputation for 3rd & Chavis, then it may be time to look at the coaches rather than the players. Maybe some better game breakdowns, possible lineup changes as some have said, some new coaches to help out with an outside perspective, etc.
I'm happy we have Chief and think he's a great co-ordinator. That being said, I would be interested to see our success rate on 3rd and 10+ vs. the rest of the SEC. If I have one criticism of him, it's that we seem to give up some 3rd and longs.
And we go into this prevent defense crap when it's 3rd and long which never works, stick to the blitz it's what got us our identity......and actually tackling the opponent.
