I expected a better than average defense, for sure. This defense is ridiculous, and it looks like the same mistakes in the same schemes are being made over and over again.
So everyone feels that Chavis is intentionally not playing a more effective defensive scheme? What exactly is his motivation for that?
I hate to utter the T-word, but it reminds me of Lou Tepper's abomination that, ultimately, got Dinardo fired.
It's not a question of intentionally playing bad defense, it's a question of whether he knows how to play effective defense with these athletes. I just happen to believe it could be done better than what I've seen this year.
I think the SEC is seeing the DOWNSIDE of being so good...so many gone to NFL. The Tar Heel B-ball syndrome. You just can't lose that many and stay as good as you were with them It would seem " smart coaching" would evolve to play more and more depth chart guys ROUTINELY,
I think it's a legit question by the original poster. Remember, 2 games lost last season with this same feel. So this is now recurring over 2 seasons. And giving up 3rd downs has been happening since his first game against Jake Locker and the Huskies. I'm willing to give chief a pass due to attrition, but he needs to earn his $ next year, and hell the remainder of this one. Beat Bama and all is forgiven.
Guys, Chavis didn't suddenly forget how to coach. A big part of this has to do with losing 8 starters. There is a lot of youth and inexperience out there. If you're clamoring for a change, get a new DB coach in here, as it seems that's where the bulk of the problem lies. Regarding the end of half/end of game trend, I really don't know what to say. I will tell you this, it's not just Chavis's defense. If you watch other college games, and the NFL, teams make late game comebacks all the time. If anything, take some chances and blitz, and play man-to-man instead of a soft zone. Perhaps trying something different is the answer. Same with the third down issues, play a more aggressive scheme. The D couldn't get off the field last night, and Bo Wallace looked a world beater.
The last part of your post (suggesting something else be attempted on D) is exactly what makes me wonder about Chavis. It seems self-evident these players are not going to suddenly start playing defense the way Chief wants to play it, yet we're not seeming to change much - which makes it far more likely we'll continue to see the same results.
Well, it didn't help that the offense turned the ball over 3 times, and couldn't get truly going until the late in the 3rd quarter. Giving up 27 pts would have been more than enough to win if our offense played like it did the first 4 games. Then, we would just be talking about how young the defense is, needing to continue to get the young talent more plays and experience, and improving on 3rd down.
With all the talk about losing 8 starters ... maybe it's that Chavis isn't so great, but rather, it was the personel that he had to work with that made him look as good as people think he is! And I made the same comment Issy made on another thread ... Louis made Welter look like he didn't need to be on the field. That kid is something special, and needs to be in on the majority of the snaps. Welter's back peddling while he goes lateral cost the game ... OM should have never scored that last TD. Louis would have stepped up and plugged that whole, such that it would have at least bought a littel time for some help to arrive. Heck .. what I saw of Louis last night, he would have made the stop in the backfield. He made several at the line last night. If Louis is not starting MLB next week, then it's safe to say that Chavis ain't as great as people think he is. BUT THEN .. it wouldn't be the first time that CLM played the lessor player.
