While Chavis' D definitely kept us in games and kept some opponents from scoring enough to beat us... his defense also lost us some close games we should've won. Look at the Bama game... we held them to 30 or so yards the entire 2nd half, and yet on that last drive he played soft D and allowed them to march the field at will. Why fix what's working? Fuck him... now he can experience losing to LSU.
We've had great defenses way before he got here. Muschamp had defenses that led the nation in both scoring defense and total defense. Under Pellini, LSU was ranked 3rd nationally in overall defense for each of his three years here. There's a much higher percentage that LSU's defenses will be okay than him having the same successful at A and EM. We don't need Chav, he needs us. He's going to earn his keep over there cause he won't have the talent he's had here, overall.
Like I said, if that's all that separates him and his kids/our program, in his eyes, from A and EM, phuck him.
I have criticized Chavis a lot recently. I fully agree with you about his end of game tendencies. I also agree the Bama loss as well as four or so other games over the last few seasons was on the prevent D. I do agree with Lasalle in that Chavis has been our best and most consistent coach. He just needs to be overran when it comes to end of game coaching. Or that very well could be on Miles. We shall see. Fact is the D was our saving grace this year. Without the D, LSU is not even close to Bama at the end.
Look what he did with Mettenberger and he won a starting job with Tennessee. There has to be something there to work with. It is like a potter working with clay. If it's too soft, no amount of work will get it to take shape. What Miles sees in Jennings is beyond me. 50% completion rate won't cut it in the SEC. He does have his throw it away down though.
