I've never understood this Notre Dame Derangement Syndrome. If you're a college football fan, why would you hate ND and all the good that it stands for? As Ivan Maisel wrote in his three point stance: Why do people hate on successful institutions that try to do it the right way like ND football, Duke basketball, USA, etc...? If you don't think student-athletics are important, then why watch college football in the first place? You're going to see much higher caliber of play and talent in the NFL.
I don't think hate for ND stems from their regard for excellence in the classroom. In fact, I am pretty sure nobody here cares what some defensive end, I've at least never heard of, is doing on his final paper. Most of the hate stems from the fact that if ND has a, somewhat, successful year (if that's what you call 6-6), they automatically get a bowl bid. If you want to be legitimized as a true caliber team how about you join a conference and play a conference championship game? Nobody here is going to wipe the snot from your nose because you're a ND fan and don't understand why people are frolicking through your downfall. Truth be told, though, I think ND is a respectable team with great history. No bad blood between this LSU fan and ND because we kicked the living sh*t out of you a few years back and you have yet to show signs of a rise to prominence since. Look at it this way, when you guys play USC you're everybody's favorite team on this forum.
That quote by the ND player was refreshing. It was beautiful because that player really put things into proper perspective. This BC$ mentality of pumping mega bank into football programs' facilities, coaches salaries, recruiting budgets, etc. is really wearing me down. It's almost like the programs are conning $$ out of the pockets of "fans" with huge ticket prices, licensed seating fees, mandatory donations in exchange for season tickets, etc. Just so that the BC$ schools make tons of revenue from TV deals...Just so the NFL doesn't have to spend megabucks developing players themselves. Just so the NCAA corporation stays in the fortune 500. This is what leads to the undercurrent of fan dissatisfaction prevalent on this fan board...just as much as fans pinning their self worth and happiness on national championships. Is it really all worth it? Does a lot of money from football really go into the universities general fund? Does any of the money really translate into education and well formed students?
I don't know if you follow the NBA, but Isiah Thomas as GM of the New York Knicks did such a bad job that not only did he get fired but he'll get the next GM fired as well. Isiah signed a lot of bad contracts which the Knicks will still be responsible for, long after they booted Isiah. The same thing happened at ND- Ty Willingham was such a bad coach, and more importantly, such a lazy recruiter that he not only got fired but he left such a dearth of talent that the next coach would lose a lot of games. For example, take the offensive line that you criticized Weis for. Look at how many offensive linemen that Willingham had recruited when Weis arrived. Every ND fan knew that 2007 was going to be bad because the chickens would come home to roost for Willingham's laziness. Willingham started off with sub-standard recruiting in the beginning by ND's standards- Brady Quinn had to self-recruit himself to get to ND. But, after those early stumbles, Willingham showed his true colors and recruiting fell off a cliff. I saw 2007 and 2008 more about Willingham, where 2009 would be the first time to really judge Weis.
At first, I was reluctant to buy into that and I'm still not 100% convinced, although I'm more open to it then before. I just don't think the offense suits JJ and they've done a poor job developing him and/or designing plays that he's comfortable with. But Tennessee fans were definitely on the money with their '3rd and Chavis' predictions. It burns me up every time the opposition converts too. I hope he changes and we get a more attacking style defense that we're used to seeing, instead of playing a 'bend but don't break' zone. Can't stand it. The rush 4/drop 7 philosophy only works when you can get pressure with the D-line. Something we haven't been able to do since Dorsey left. Speaking of Weiss, I think he was more responsible for the development of Brady (he was their OC during their 1st 2 Super Bowls) then Belichick was, so there you go. We know. It was only a topic for discussion.
I would take him. I put personal feelings aside for winning at all costs. We are clearly a step behind the Alabama program at this point and must pull out all the stops to get back on top. That being said, he is going back to the NFL.
Link to why I have NDDS. I do respect the school and it's tradition. Last winter I made a point to take a sideline trip to South Bend to visit the campus and meet the Golden Dome and TDJ. Beautiful campus. 1966 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State football game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
LOL, I don't hate ND, but I do find a dislike for "Deranged Syndrome" ND followers who think their football program is somehow still on the same level as Duke basketball. I thought you had to win to make that list. Silly me. Notre Dame Derangement Syndrome.... is this an affliction only non-believers get? If so, what do you call the syndrome most ND fans are in? too funny!!opcorn:
Weis would most likely be a good hire for OC, but like the OP pointed out, it's a pipe-dream/fantasy to even think about it.
This. Except for the fact that I DO hate ND and root for USC to have their best game of the year. The hate comes from the fact that you are treated special by the news media and bowl commitie's all of the time based on such escoteric BS as tradition, the Gipper, & Rockne. This is all news media and Hollywood BS and has no relevance except to them and ND fans. After decades of this favoritism BS it gets REAL OLD.
