Taylor Mays fails to impress in DB drills at NFL combine - NFL - SI.com "Chad Jones/S/LSU: Jones ran reasonably well, timing in the mid-4.5s, yet did nothing to dispel the belief he's solely a downhill safety. He was incredibly slow in reverse and displayed poor footwork. He looked a bit confused on the field and had to be stopped in drills several times to be given direction." I wonder what is wrong with him upstairs. In listening to him talk, he doesn't seem to be a dumb kid, but then something like this occurs and it leaves you scratching your head. I can't believe he comes out any better than a 3rd rounder at the earliest after this performance. But who knows.
I agree. I think he has an upside still, but it's getting waaaaay late for upsides. He's athletic as hell, but there's something missing, and the best I can come up with is this: Chad Jones gets by on athleticism alone and has not developed "football sense".
Anybody think he'd be better off in pro baseball than football? Seems like there is less "reading the play" in baseball.
If he had to be stopped and told what to do on the drills, then it's not good for him. Every kid there has been practicing those drills for weeks now. Everyone except Chad it seems...
Oh and Chad Jones did a grant total bench press reps of......... You got to be sitting down for this one folks: 9 REPS Obviously the kid has never seen the inside of a gym. Lazy + dumb = Jamarcus Russellesque
It's pretty much a foregone conclusion after the combines that the only professional team he will ever make is a major league baseball team. Specialty left handers are hot commodities and he will make a great living at being just that. I think he will be outstanding.
From ProFootballTalk.com "Having stood out on the diamond as an outfielder for LSU and gone on record for saying that baseball was his first passion, Jones had some questions to answer during interviews about how he would handle adversity if his football career did not go his way. He did nothing to quash perceptions that he cannot be trusted to maximize his talent, as his interview was described as one of the worst of the allotted 60 that every team is given. Not only did he appear dispassionate in interviews, he clocked in the high 4.5s in the 40--slower than expected--and repped 225 pounds only nine times at 221 pounds, poor for a safety of his size, regardless of whether baseball has affected his conditioning."
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Trindon did 10 reps...and had a SLIGHTLY faster 40 time.
