there is no good way to leave a team. some handle it better than others. and hopefully those did not handle it well regret it, sincerely did not mean to handle it "wrong", and learn from the experience. as much as i dislike petey, there is no way he could have left without leaving hard feelings. thats just how it is. and as far as the recruit and telling him a month before he would be there, how do we know he didnt know he wouldnt? if has been stated otherwise, sorry i missed it, but maybe at that time he had no idea he would even be considered for anything else. and im saying this thinking the man is better at self-promotion than anything else.
Pete's facing at least two depositions back in Cali and he will be under the gun in both: Pete Carroll's testimony is sought in lawsuit naming ex-assistant - latimes.com
From a USC perspective, this is a post they have stickied at the top of the Trojam football forum at WeAreSC: For nine years, Pete Carroll preached the mantra of "Finish" to his players. There were t-shirts printed up, chants after game. The importance of finishing things right, that's what was important. You couldn't win a game in the first quarter or the second or even the third. You could only win in the fourth quarter. Finish. Unfortunately, when it came time for the Pete Carroll era to come to an end at USC, the coach forgot one of his most important lessons. Over the last few days, he has left players and recruits in the dark while he pursued his own future. I understand the need for a certain level of privacy to protect his own negotiations, that is common sense, but there were also things that could have been done to handle the transition in a better fashion. With current players, the majority of them received a text message from one of the assistant coaches saying Carroll was gone. Even though it was a poorly kept secret, Carroll should have arranged for a face to face meeting with the team at the earliest possible moment when he was allowed to say something. He owed them that much. As far as recruits, that is the bigger shame. Most recruits were kept in the dark over the weekend, a time period when Carroll was still employed by USC as our football coach. If he wasn't able to call them back, at least have somebody else call asap. These are kids who are ready to commit the next four years of their life to USC and for a few of them it was time to enroll at USC today for the spring semester. The look on Kyle Prater's face during his Army game interview told it all as he explained his confusion about what was going on at USC. Needless to say, Prater (along with Dillon Baxter and Brice Schwab) have elected to hold off on enrolling until a new staff is in place and who can blame them for that?
He did meet with the team after they found out via text message. Like I said, he doesn't owe the school, the boosters or the fans anything. But in my opinion, he owes it to the kids to tell them face to face and not through a text message from an assistant. This is the report I was referring to. It was pretty widely reported.
It was on SportsCenter before Carroll even formally accepted the position. I can't blame him for letting the team know any way he could rather than having them hear it on TV.
Yeah, but you started this "Carroll To Seattle Seahawks" thread on 1/8. Pete Caroll didn't have the team meeting until 1/11. And that text didn't get sent out until 1/10... and Pete didn't send out that text, one of his assistant coaches did. The issue was with the way Pete didn't do anything to address all the news that he was going to Seattle until 1/11 at his press conference. Yeah, a few days might not seem like a long time to be kept in the dark to us LSU fans and other outsiders, but it was agonizing for USC fans and USC recruits as well (as shown by their reactions at the Army All-American game this weekend).
He was just formally introduced today. Why would he tell anybody anything until all of the contractual details were done and he was definitely going to take the job. You can't hold it against him because news programs jump on a story the split second they hear about it. Did we not learn anything about Miles to Michigan?
I don't hold anything against Pete Carroll. I'm just saying I'm not surprised that there are a lot USC fans, players, and recruits that do.
Oh. Well duh. The guy could have told the team two months ago and they would still find a reason to cry.
Well, with the Les-to-Michigan analogy, Les kept doing his job... he kept coaching the team, kept talking to the press about it, etc. Carroll didn't do that. He went AWOL from the time the news first broke until 1/11... didn't talk to the press, didn't talk to the fans, didn't talk to the players, didn't talk to the recruits.
