Bite your tounge Izzy. Man it just seems everytime I turn around you and I are on the opposite ends of something. Lets all remember my preseason prop bets: Cards to win thier division : Jury still out Dodgers to win their division: Just about locked up Cubs to win < 93 : all but locked up Cards to win it all. This is the big enchillada 2 dimes if this one holds up. I like the trade, especially if Derosa can heat up a little.
I never understood why Nutria hated so badly a guy with a .280 average. Lugo's biggest problem is his big, fat contract, but that's not his fault. And Holliday was 4-5 tonight. Not bad.
because the guy never even sniffed .280 in Boston his numbers in 2 full season as Red Sox SS .247 / .314 / .343 which puts him as about the 5th best SS in the AL east and somewhere around the 14th best in the entire AL oh, and Boston fans didn't call the dude E6 for nothing. I never cared about his salary. Just didn't like him as a player. And don't know why they kept him so long. Renteria hit well, but struggled in the field in '05. Got rid of him after 1 season Alex Gonzalez was awesome in the field, but couldn't hit for sh!t. Got rid of him after one season. Lugo can't hit or field worth a dam! Kept him for 2.5 seasons:huh:
.284 average in limited AB's in 2009 .268 average in 2008. Sure, 2007 was flat awful, but he wasn't so bad in 2008-09 in a lineup full of all-stars, you can afford to have one scrub hitting 9th.
when a team has the resources that Boston does, have a guy in the bottom 5 of AL shortstops (offensively and defensively) is pretty lame. if a guy is weak on defense, but swings a good bat, you hide him somewhere in a corner and keep him in the lineup. if a guy has a soft bat, but is gold glove caliber on defense, you hide him in the lineup and keep him on the field. when a guy is well below average in all phases of the game, you dump his ass and get someone who can do at least one or the other. He's the worst SS to suit up for the Sox in 15 years or so. and it ain't really close. A journeyman who was unemployed in spring training (Nick Green) and has never been able to land a full time starting job ANYWHERE was able to replace him without any drop off. edit: sorry for the hijack, just that Lugo ain't worthy of his own thread.
I feel you and I agree 100%. I'm not saying Lugo is a very good player -- he's actually a below average player -- but you made my point for me. Nick Green and Jed Lowrie blow to no end, but you don't hate on those guys. I always wondered why the hate for Lugo all of the time, but those other guys with equally anemic numbers don't get the disdain he gets/got. I'm not even just talking about you. Just trying to gauge the general consensus from Sox fans in general, because a lot of my friends are the same way. My conclusion was the big contract. It has to be something, because people actually call Nick Green the unsung MVP of the team this season, when he's done next to nothing all the same. In 2009: Green: .250 5 HR 31 RBI 9 errors in 62 games at SS. Lugo: .284 1 HR 8 RBI (in 37 games) 7 errors in 32 games at SS.
I don't like either of them, but I don't have to hate them. neither are permanent options (at least I hope Theo doesn't consider them to be). You Lugo was brought in with the idea of being THE guy at SS. And Theo/Francona seemed determined to make it work come hell or high water. That's not the case with either of these two. I'm confident the Sox will do what it takes to land a real SS either before the deadline, or in the offseason. Green would make a decent backup, kinda filling the Alex Cora type roll, just not an everyday player. Lowrie is probably gonna be thrown in on a trade before too long.
makes sense. :thumb: If only the Sox still had Hanley. Of course, there would be no Beckett, but it's still fun to daydream a little.
