The biggest difference I see between Harris and AJ (besides the athleticism and ability) is it seems to me that the entire team plays better when Harris is under center. Almost like him being in the game energizes everyone, while all I see AJ do is pout and bitch much like JJ did.
I'm sure it's possible, although I think I saw a tweet from him earlier today that ended in #ForeverLSU -- of course, I can't find it now! I think Harris realizes he has work to do, and this is based on tweets he sent out earlier in the season. Who knows, though.
It's not just about who starts, but goes to Les' overall philosophy on the role of a QB. After 2008, it's apparent that Les came to view the QB position as a liability whose role is to be minimized, rather than an asset. It's the reason that, regardless of the OC scheme, we have the same offensive predictability. And I suspect that carries over into the coaching, where a "don't lose the game for us" mentality is drilled into the QBs' heads. The sole exception to this over the last 6 seasons was 2013, where exceptional talent at skill positions and a senior NFL-caliber QB forced his hand. Until Les decides to change his mindset, I wouldn't bet on some QB renaissance happening at LSU.
Even in 2013, he didn't pass until 3rd down. The liability vs asset philosophy about the passing game is spot on.
I saw a lot of passes on 1st down this year, however many were either dropped, qb took a sack or missed the receiver. Young QBs and one that isn't accurate limit what an OC can call.
Since Perriloux screwd up pur QB rotation (having a JR/SR taking the reigns and allowing a Fr/SO to develop into the next Jr/SR) Miles has certainly viewed our QB's as liabilities. I think we have had some talent at the position (remember, Mettenberger had 3 years to play, yet he sat and watched Lee/Jefferson his first year, and I have NO doubt that he had more talent in his little pinky than Jefferson and Lee) but Miles' philoopy has been to try to hide the QB and NO one can win consistently placing no confidence in the QB and trying to force the Defense to make us win. This year, we were back to a tru SO and a true FR. I know no one on this oard likes the idea of a two QB system, but if there ever was a year where LSU had two QB's of above average talent, but no experience, this was the year to develop that system. The way ND played Zaire and Golston is the way LSU should have played Jennings/Harris all season, until one truly was better than the other. We all know Harris has more upside and should have played a lot more football this year. Instead, we start next season with Jennings, who looks very inept at QB (or does so because Miles/Cameron have no confidence our QB's ca do more), and Jennings, who will start next year with more hurt feelings and dissappointment than experience (in a season where he looked like he earned PT). I hope Harris has thick skin and will continue to work hard, but if he wins the spring and the fall and still sits behind Jennings, Harris will be gone and recruits like Patterson and Franks will certainly pay close attention, as will every other QB who thinks they want to be a QB at LSU
Agree 100% Tirk. As our bowl game started I observed how well the ND freshman QB was running the offense and thought Brandon Harris could do the same thing. I was a HS baseball coach and Harris has a great throwing motion, much like the ND QB. Harris has a strong arm, with a quick release, and with his mobility he is clearly the better talent than Jennings. What is frustrating is to see Jenning getting all of the game time, and Harris getting zero. I respect Brain Kelly for having the balls to put both QBs on the field in a bowl game so he could see who was his best prospect for next year. That is a man with a plan. I've said it before in this forum, Cam Cameron is not a spread offense coach and you can't coach what you don't know. His last college job before coming to LSU was in 2001, before the spread offense became popular in high school and college, and he is learning the spread OJT. Cam might be great at developing the Joe Flaccos of the NFL, but he still has a lot to learn about developing college QBs. Our lack of developing mobile QBs has everything to do with a lack of talent...coaching talent.
i was wondering, since cam camerons name is cam cameron then is the name on his birth certificate cameron cameron. thats a fireable offense imo. i dont want to wikipedia it and ruin it however.
