Clearly YOU are the one not paying attention because you just stated everything I have already said, the radio is free, the pay services already have the fee built in so why the fuck should I have to pay additional fees? I dont.

A lot of restaurants must be playing satellite radio or music from the cable. If the just tuned in the radio it would be full of annoying commercials. The restaurants have to pay for their satellite radio or cable. Do they still have to pay a fee to ASCAP?

I know that they have to pay a huge fee to show a pay per view event but are they paying more than anybody else just for cable?

It is a racket isn't it. You buy a song and then you pay royalties every time you play it.

Almost certain they do. My baby momma works for them and she stalks me like a lion on a wounded gazelle so she will chime in shortly. If not I will be forced to ask her.

No only if you fall victim to their bullshit. If I pay for a service then I am allowed to use it. Take football, sports bars pay out the ass for NFL ticket and the cable. They don't have to pay additional fees on top of that to some stupid non profit.

Same with music, if you pay for Spotify you are free to stream it wherever the fuck you want. If you have a pirate feed of a ppm that is different but if you paid for it you owe them nuts.

The crappy thing about it though, it isn't the artists making the money. It's the companies. I read where Pharrel had Happy played on Pandora close to a million times. He made 2400 dollars on those million plays. Now Apple is trying to ruin indie labels with their bullshit playlist software. That's why I don't mind file sharing, I don't and haven't done it in years because it's too risky these days, but for every dollar that is lost 99 cents of that dollar is the record companies, not the artists. Hell some bands even try to get people to pirate their shit, most notably System of a Down and Trent Reznor.

It's complicated and I'm not an expert. He would owe the Rolling Stones nothing, but a commercial recording might owe some composer royalties to Richards and Jagger.
