No questions about whether a school can play big-time basketball and preserve its integrity? The top coaches command similar money. Of course attendance is lower, but there are many more home games. Lots of TV exposure for the big programs. And the question is ridiculous on its face. Texas and Florida have excellent academics, just to name a couple. The question about investing the kind of additional money to become a major football player at a time of shrinking state budgets is legitimate, but this has some of the same self-righteous tone as the Big 10 president's sour grapes back in '07.
For the record, I did not ask the question, it was headline in a newspaper. I do agree it is rather elitist, something UNC always longs for. hwr geaux tigers
I was talking with one of my customers...a big Ohio State fan...and we were scratching our heads about why Davis was fired now when nothing new has come out for a year. He said that it was probably a reaction to the NCAA. With Ohio State, he said that there was a long time between official communications. He said. "UNC probably didn't hear from the NCAA for a long time and they suddenly started rattling their sabers...and UNC decided it was time to act." It's possible the NCAA was waiting for UNC to take action against Butch Davis a year ago and they got tired of waiting so they started the implied threats. It makes sense to me, but then I'm an advocate of "Bar stool logic".
