Let's make this thread about Mack Brown, since a thread about Butch Davis and UNC is boring anyway. :yelwink2: Again, to reiterate, I don't like Mack Brown. But I can't help but respect his career. At UNC, he inherited a chitty chitty team. He rebuilt that program, and brought respectability to it. Now at UT, I agree he has talent. But it isn't like he's the only game in town. There's a lot of competition for that talent, and the bottom line is, the guy wins...a LOT. In recent history, I can't remember a team that has the sustained success that UT has enjoyed. I just can't look at 9 CONSECUTIVE double digit win seasons and relate that record to 'underachieving'.
Fair enough. For sake of argument, Les hits the bricks (calm down flamers, this is only for argument) Do you want Mack taking over the job? I would have no less than 10 coaches I'd want on the sideline other than that beady eyed whiner. You do realize that texas is almost a country in itself. There are more high schools in Houston alone than the entire state of Oklahoma and he doesn't have a quarterback nor a running back. How in the hell does that happen? He is about to start a new streak, 2 in a row of less than double digit. Macks time has passed him by my friend and yes I get it, you don't like him. I don't either but I think he is overrated.
I don't think he's overrated. I do however think he's overdue to retire. Houston is a hotbed. My contention is that with TAMU, LSU, and others, he doesn't have Houston all to himself. Fact is, EVERYBODY recruits TX. OU gets plenty from there. To answer your question, HELL NO! I wouldn't want Mack Brown in P&G in ANY capacity. As stated, I can't STAND to hear him speak. HOWEVER, if I could go back in time and have anything to do about it, I would have wanted him after Archer left...or even after Arnsparger. LSU would've been a much better team with him than they were with Archer/Hallman/Dinardo.
By the way...is Butch Davis one of those ten? Not for me he isn't. (thread rerailed itself...) By the way...I can think of more than ten coaches I'd rather than MB. It's just that I can think of 25 or so I'd prefer over BD.
Not even close, which brings us back to my original point. NC fired the best they will probably ever have. NC, see, not LSU, Mia, OU, Tx, USC, Mich, ND. Who are they going to get that is better than Butch? Concur, they are both in about the same position IMO. I wouldn't hire either of them as equipment mgr much less HC.
I think UNC should go after Northwestern's coach, but he is a Northwestern guy, so I doubt he would leave. It depends on what becomes of the rest of the NCAA investigation at UNC. If they wind up sanctioned, they're really screwed, because they're already not a football school. They'll have an even harder time getting someone decent to go to a team saddled with sanctions.
Exactly right, although if I'm Pat Fitzgerald I'm not leaving for UNC, I think he has it better where he is if he can at least keep NW competitive. They will probably try to get someone like that though, or out of the MAC. Maybe Ricky Bustle is available.
Exactly they violated school, and NCAA rules!!!! You do the crime, you pay the time....I have no respect for teams that do that, not one bit....
This firing, when all is said and done, has stated publicly, "We are not a football school, and enough of us don't want us to be one, so we won't" It is pretty hard to walk that dog back. I cannot conceive of who they will get, but I am willing to bet it will not be a big name, probably a no name. And they just screwed up an aesthietically perfect and quite excellent stadium, with "big time" accoutrements. OBTW: Here is headline from Raleigh Paper this morning. (Raleigh is about 10 miles from Chapel Hill, if you are unfamiliar with NC geo) "Can UNC play big-time football and preserve its integrity?" note the implication!
