What has the folks up here insane is the timing. Nothing new surfaced, nothing new came to light, and wham, a week before football practice, they fire his azz. The chancellor is a new, young guy who many say is in over his head, and he panicked. The question is: What changed in late July? And they have no answers. That is more of an issue, methinks, than the canning. Oh by the way, the AD resigned mid-week, too. A year or so before his previously announced retirement. There has also been some movement on the Board of Trustees. Those that want UNC as a football school are apoplectic. Those that hate football as the enemy of academia, and there are many, are jubilant. The Raleigh paper posted a couple hundred pages of emails received by the chancellor. Some are pretty funny. Many supportive, many furious. When these things happen, I think an overlooked issue is "What will the next guy think about the way Davis was handled?" Geaux Tigers
They are hoping that by whacking BD the NCAA will go easy on them ala The Sweater Vest/tosu. I doubt it would/will matter when all is said and done. They probably just fired the best coach that school will ever have.
I don't think Davis is much of a great coach, and past results support me on this. I don't even think he's the best coach UNC ever had. He inherited a train wreck at Miami, but bottom line is, he did far better the first two seasons than he did in his third season, by which time he should've been improving if he's such a great coach. It took him several years to get them back to national contention, at which time he left for the NFL. At UNC, he could only muster 8 win seasons in a weak ACC...with FSU being down while he was at UNC.
Notice I said will ever "have" not had, there is a difference although in this case not much of one. I guess you could summon up mack brown but really? Guy is sitting on absolute gold and is lucky if he can produce brass. The point was who are they going to get to replace him that is better than Davis? Yeah, I'll let you think on it.
Actually Shane, I didn't notice you said anything about it. I was just responding to the thread in general, after listening to some blithering idiot on Sirius this morning yacking about how great Butch Davis is/was. Also, I don't really care much for Mack Brown. His voice grates on my nerves in a similar fashion to Buddy Roemer's. However... Butch Davis, great coach that he is, has exactly ONE double digit win season...in his entire CFB coaching career. Mack Brown has...wait for it... ELEVEN. Including two at UNC, and 9 in a row at UT. I take it you don't like Mack Brown...and like I said, I don't either. But this thread is about Butch Davis...one of the most overrated coaches in CFB history. UNC isn't a football school anyway. All he did for them was solidify this. [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mack_Brown[/ame] [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Davis[/ame] A joke to compare these two...
Check post #3 I agree though, MB wins some games but with all the talent he has to choose from he has to have the most under achieving program in D1 football. Yes, the thread is about Davis and UNC which is why I said he was probably as good as they will get.
