He was as secretary of Defense. Just doing his job to conduct the war. But it was Bush and Cheney that were the architects of the strategy to invade a country that had nothing to do with 9/11over imaginary WMD's.

It was the wrong move as history has shown. Iraq and Afganistan have been Vietnam on steroids. They are tied together with 9/11 and possibly the aftermath of the 1991 Kuwait invasion by Iraq.
Many including me were against having US forces remain in Afaghanistan after the Taliban were ousted. Unfortunately they failed to nail OBL and that led to the mess we're in now. There were some serious military and diplomatic people who recommended we leave.
I firmly believe the true justification for the invasion was to fulfill many neocons belief that taking out Saddam would result in a secular state with ties to the west. W had preached democracy to the ME and this was to be a demonstration. I also believe they were convinced that there were at least chemical & biological WMDs there. BTW this was the belief of Putin, the French, Germans and even the Iraqi generals. No one is psychologist enough to know if W was trying to make up for, show GHW or just doing what he believed to be right in the invasion.
Regardless the piss poor implementation of the occupation was criminal IMO. If there was a mistake to be made Ws team made it. They made a bad situation worse.
As to Rummy, he is full of shit. He was responsible for the lack of follow up support that left ammo dumps open (he should be called the father of the IED) not properly dealing with the Iraqi military. His failure part and parcel of the administration.
BTW what Obama inherited he continued to fuck up.

Worse they had the naive imagination to think that Iraq would become a Jeffersonian democracy, even though there is not a democracy anywhere in the Arab world. It was Vietnam all over again. The belief that inside of every gook there is an American trying to get out. Anytime that there is not a ruthless strongman in power Iraq reverts to being a three-way civil war.

Why is it always bush and Cheney? I thought Colin Powell was the adult in the room and he told the same story.

He was the only one in the room that was not a career politician. Generals have decades of training that rewards being loyal to your commander. Ex soldiers often behave this way. It makes them politically clumsy.
