This sounds like media influence to me, considering the fact that he wasn't even fined for it and Urlacher himself admitted to SI.com that he didn't even see the finger pointing. I also can't help but think that had the Saints won, they wouldn't have fined him...don't know why, but I do.
Of course they fined him. They fine guys for even the most basic endzone dances. I understand the spirit of what the NFL is trying to (encouraging sportsmanship, etc.), but their application of their rules is so ham-handed. And I don't buy for a minute that Urlacher didn't see him. He just didn't want to give into it in the interview. Not that that matters, really.
He shouldn't have pointed at the guy. That's bush league (no pun intended). The last thing Reggie wants is a rep for being a cocky, taunting sob. His knees ain't that tough.
There is a huge difference between what someone should do because of stupidity or because it's just not smart and being fined for it and thus making it a rule breaking action. I don't disagree that it was dumb, stupid, and he shouldn't have done it. But to fine him for it???? I mean, give me a break. What about when Urlacher barks over a player he spears after a huge tackle? That's taunting too??
Reggie has never seemed like the kind to do something like that unprovoked. My guess is that Urlacher & Co. were talking major sh!t to him prior to that TD. I know that he's certainly been one of the most sought-after targets for defenses because of all his hype. Remember when that dude from the Ravens said that he was trying to hurt Reggie? And they were taunting the hell out of him before that. Not that any of this makes what he did ok, I just don't think it's a case of him showboating for no reason.
