I know we have discussed this ad nauseam. But Charles Hanagriff just wrote an article and this is his quote when discussing the QB situation for the remainder of the season: "Finally, where does Jordan Jefferson fit in now? Will there be enough snaps for him to justify burning his redshirt? (Technically, the shirt is already burnt, but not really.)"
I don't know why I keep thinking that I've heard something about the 1st three games of the season and a certain amount of snaps. Perhaps that could have been an old rule and I think it was. Being up here in sooner land I got to hear all about them burning Keith Nichols red shirt and that may have been in their 1st game a couple years ago. Either way, I'm not sure we can afford to RS him now.
We've been through this a thousand times. Play ONE play and you burn your redshirt. However, it is still possible to get a medical hardship exemption--although these are supposed to be harder to come by now.
This is out of the question, yes burning his redshirt is compeltely justified. You can't just roll with 2 quarterbacks in college football. Just last game we had our starter knocked out, if Lee went down too and we had Jefferson redshirted we'd be down to the walk-on McCartney. Jefferson needs to be there and I'm sure he'll get snaps in blowouts but we need him there in case of injury.
Any freshman that is on the sidelines throughout the season is "at risk" of burning their redshirt at any time. If you remember, this was the beef that Craig Steltz had w/ Saban. Steltz did not play all season, then got put into the Capital One game (at the end I think) for only a few plays. I had read that Steltz was upset b/c he couldn't get on the field much after that for the next 2 years (Laron Landry), and was upset that when he finally made the starting line up, he only had one season to play. I think he was concearned that he wouldn't have enough playing time to show his skills. As it turns out, he didn't need the extra year of exposure to impress the pro scouts, but you can certainly see why he'd be frustrated. Redshirts are a complicated matter for coaches to deal w/, especially after a few games into the season. I would think at this point in the season, the staff is starting to lean toward redshirting Jefferson, but it's a decision they don't need to make until the moment presents itself (injury or both qb's playing horrible). My guess is that they will keep grooming Jefferson to be prepared to go in at anytime, but as the season goes on they will be less likely to just put him into a game to just see him in a game situation. Just my 2 cents, which might not be worth anything!
some lower profile guys can get under the rs radar even if they played. Not a possible starting qb for the bcs champs.
I had asked a HS coach about references to the VT QB "redshirting" this year when he had played last year. I was told a player can redshirt any year.
When you only have 3 scholly QB's, you HAVE to have that 3rd guy prepared, IMO. Hatch's injury last week solidifys my stance because it's not outside the rhelm of possibility that you can get 2 injuries at the QB position (either in the same game, or in a short period of time) and before you know it, you just might NEED that 3rd QB. Personally, if Lee and Hatch are both knicked up, then it's easier to see Jefferson under center knowing that he's at least gotten SOME sort of playing time--reguardless of how minimal.
