Tabling the discussion about what it is about Kelly that some ND fans don't like, it seems to me - and I may be wrong - that Kelly has a distaste, if not an enmity, toward certain constituencies, towards certain traditions, toward certain approaches.
I think he views it as almost a stand-alone program, with only the minimum necessary connections to the student body and its culture and environment. Now, I think he truly does want the players to go to class and to be good citizens - he's not running a semi-pro organization like Saban.
I think he would definitely support a football player dorm if given the option.
I think he is dismissive and even hostile towards certain other things about the program that he sees as anathema to his remaking of the program in his image and/or consistent with his "ND 2.0" vision.
I think he knows that a significant - not large, but significant - segment of the alumni don't care for him and/or his "get used to it"/"get with the times" approach. And he relishes that, because he's always rubbed those kinds of people the wrong way, and they him.
We know that he and his agent were the ones who initiated contact with the NFL/Philadelphia. I wonder if part of his motivation was because he gets tired of the challenge of nudging ND towards Version 2.0.
I think it is certain that he wore a Members Only jacket for a few years.
