    Tomlinson
    1427 yds rushing 5.0 avg
479 yds receiving on 52 receptions
    29 TDs (NFL record)

    Brees
    66.4 pct completion rate
    8.42 yards per attempt
    25 touchdowns, 10 interceptions
101.2 QB rating (#1 in the NFL)

Tomlinson probably still the favorite, but Brees has definitely gotten back in the race with his outstanding performance on national TV totally destroying and humiliating a defense that had been playing great the previous 6 weeks.

The question always arises as to what is meant by MVP. How do you measure it?

My measure is imagine the player is injured in the first game of the season. What would be the ramifications for their respective team?

I say the Chargers are 7-6 winning mainly due to defense and efficient offensive play (nothing spectacular, but effective enough). I say the Saints are 5-8 with a several close losses in which the offense couldn't put the game away and allowed other teams to mount late 4th quarter comebacks.

So, based on that measure, it's a wash.

If Tomlinson continues to mount TD's (somewhere around 36) and San Diego goes on to win 13 or 14 games and get the homefield advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, then the award is his. If they stumble a couple of times, go 12-4, fail to get a first round bye, and the Saints go 12-4 and get a first round bye, then the award could go either way.

It's just nice to know that the Saints sport the best quarterback in the NFL. Mr. Manning, please take a seat.

LaDainian, we bow before you. We are not worthy.

Both are deserving. I think the TD record just about sews it up for LT. Kinda tough to have an MVP year (Brees) and one guy has just a little better year.

As a reference point, you can go back to the year Favre shared the award with Barry Sanders in 97. Sanders had 2053 yards, but only 11 TDs. Favre passed for 3700+ yards and led GB to a 13-3 record.

Breese could also break Marino's record for passing yards in a season this would help his case.

    Breese through 13 games 4033
    Marino's record 5084

350 yards per game is needed.

    Washington, NY Giants, Carolina

Washington and NY are two of the worst rush defenses in the NFL. Carolina is decent against the run. Washington and NY also poor against the pass, and Carolina is decent against the pass.

Depends what Payton decides is the easier to exploit (pass vs. run defense).

I think he will get to 4800, but that's about it. Deuce is getting stronger every week and I think Payton will want our running game clicking and a more balanced attack come playoff time. Also depends on how much the last game means to the Saints playoff positioning. If we clinch the 2nd bye week with a win over Washington and NY, then he may very well sit Brees in the 2nd half of the Carolina game (as well he should).

Here is a stat that I really had a hard time believing from last night's broadcast.

Brees with the first long pass to Henderson was 10 for 13 in passes over 30 yards on the season. He ended up throwing the TD to Henderson later on, so that average increased to 11 of 14 passes.

Just think about that a minute. It says a lot about his accuracy, but it says so much more to how we sucker in the safeties with all of our short and intermediate routes, flare passes, screens, reverse fakes, play action, etc that when Payton decides its the right time to go deep, the DB gets beat on the play and the safety is helpless in getting back to help out. It's the genius that is Sean Payton. He doesn't just go up top to keep the defenses honest. He ALWAYS has a purpose for every single play we execute on offense. They are all intended to succeed, not merely keep a defense honest. Payton is light years ahead of any other coordinator I have ever experienced. The only person I can compare him to is Steve Spurrier.

Brees is having an AMAZING season. He's been fantastic and is obviosly one of the major reasons for the Saints great season. He's also incredibly unlucky in that this is all happening in the same season that Tomlinson is playing so well. I think this season that LT (or LDT for some people) is having will go down as the greatest in NFL history. He does everything for that team and seems to be a great influence in the lockerroom. Unless Brees breaks Marino's record (I think this in highly unlikely), Tomlinson is going to win the MVP going away.

Drew Brees will not win it. Sean Payton has Coach of the Year locked up. Marques Colston probably has Rookie of the Year locked up. The press will not give the Saints too many awards. LDT is having a sick year and he will be rewarded for it.

I don't know if Colston will win rookie of the year. Had he not gotten injured, then probably. Also, Mangini is going to give Payton a run for coach of the year. Maurice Jones Drew just put himself in the ROY conversation...and he's been having a great season before this week.

I knew I was forgetting about someone, that's why I said "at least 3 candidates" when mentioning Vince Young.

Definitely he deserves a lot of consideration as well.

I think Colston has to have another blockbuster near 200 yard with a TD kinda day within one of these last 3 games. He can't just get 60-80 yards, 5-6 catches and no touches and still have a chance. He has to make the Sportscenter highlights again at some point and have the talking heads mentioning him again.

Regarding Mangini, I will just assume you meant to post that before this past Sunday at 3:15 CST. Because he lost all credibility with that performance at home versus a team he was favored to beat and for a chance to creep up to within a game of the division lead. Any talk of Mangini vs. Payton were quickly erased in one Sunday's worth of play (Jets/Bills and Saints/Cowboys). That was simply unacceptable to come out and play that poorly in arguably the biggest game of the year. They likely don't make the playoffs now with pending games at Minnesota and Miami.
