he throws the screen pass more than any other quarterback in the league also, and has Antonio Gates the best TE when it comes to possession.
well you're right that it's not the west coast offense which is kinda why i said west coasty. payton utilizes though the short passing game frequently as well as throws to the backs out of the backfield. both are pretty high west coast commandments. but yeah payton plays with his formations a lot and gives the D many looks.
Of all the great quarterbacks who are used as measuring sticks for the rest, this is definitely the one to measure Brees by. In 2006, if Brees were teamed with a Hall of Fame receiver and a defense similar to the one that backed Montana in his prime, we'd be celebrating our 2nd Super Bowl championship this year, and the debate about where to rank Brees among the greats would be raging right now. I also think the only reason Manning got the MVP award over Brees this year was because of past credentials, not because he was any better on the field this season.
Bill Walsh and Joe Montana were so in-sync, that they became as one. The pure awesome-ness of this act of evolution resulted a "Life in the Fast Lane" known as the West Coast Offense and led to many (musical) collaborations with Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner, et al... :thumb:
Bill Walsh was a tremendous offensive mind and ran a great offense. Joe Montana was an uncanny QB that had that special something that true winners have. Walsh and Montana were great together but both would have been great apart also. Montana is the greatest QB to ever play the game. Not the most physically talented, but the greatest. I remember hating the 49'rs but absolutely respecting and even fearing Montana when he played a team I was pulling for. He was a true artist in every sense. Brees has shown that same ability. Will he have the talent around him as long as Montana did in these days of free agency? If he does he could end up very well end up one of the best ever. However there are many games to be played between now and then and many good as well as bad things can happen. Hopefully he stays healthy and the Saints keep him surrounded with talent coached by Sean Payton.
I disagree. Bill Walsh time and time again kept picking out these QBs like Jim Drukenmiller and Josh Booty that he would proclaim as the next great QB like Joe Montana and they would fail miserably. Even though Joe Montana was a different guy after the injury, he was a shell of his former self at KC. The decline started when Seifert took over. No way do either of them reach "best ever" status without the other. Pretty good? Yeah. Great? Maybe. Best of all time? Not even close...
