Can someone explain why the Breeder's Cup got so much coverage on ESPN all week? I thought it was odd that they were including the Cup in the ticker all week, and then having it as a featured story a few times. I like horse racing as much as the next guy other than the degenerate gambler, but I can't figure out why this race became such a big topic for them.
i dunno why it is so popular, but i do know that horse racing is ridiculously dangerous. another horse died as a result of that race. the favorite i think. and another broke down. if i was a horse i would be terrified to race, they drop like flies during those races.
I think it is like the world championships of horse racing. All of the best horses in the world run in it. It's not limited to 2 year olds like the Triple Crown.
Because ESPN was actually broadcasting the races. The big networks get the triple crown races so there is no reason for ESPN to promote it. But this week ESPN had the Breeders Cup up against college football, so they had to generate as much attention as they could.
What I hate about horse racing is you have a 3 hour program where the first 2 hours of it is ENTIRELY pregame, waiting forever for the 4 minutes or so of actual action. Add to that that there's never any real time to follow a particular horse or anything.
In horse racing, this is one of the biggest days of the year. There were eight races all day. The Breeder's Cup races' purses total $18 million. Major dollars at stake. The best horses in the world run in these races for 2-yr olds and up. FYI - The Triple Crown is for 3-yr olds only.
