I am not sold on Nix. Chavis and Koennig seem to me to be better choices.

The knock on Chavis about being "bend-but-don't-break" is that his opponent's 3rd down conversion rate has been horrible. At Tenn, they called it "3rd and Chavis" and all kinds of other knocks.

Some people are freaking out about this and trying to attribute it to Koenning as well. You say LSU was best under Muschamp, compare Muschamp to Chavis and Koenning when it comes to opponent's 3rd down conversion rate:

    Will Muschamp
    Auburn, 2006 - 38.55 (#55)
    Auburn, 2007 - 36.55 (#41)
    Texas, 2008 - 35.09 (#30)

    Clemson
    2006 - 36.32 (#46)
    2007 - 36.04 (#36)
    2008 - 37.77 (#56)

    Tenn
    2006 - 41.18 (#86)
    2007 - 40.38 (#71)
    2008 - 37.10 (#49)

You are talking about Nix as LSU head coach as well?

And since when is the Ole Miss D feared in the SEC and nationally?

Both Tenn and Clemson beat Ole Miss when it comes to the national defensive stats, including least yards/play allowed and least points/game allowed. Why don't Clem and Tenn have "feared" defenses to you as well?

The thing is that despite all of that, they are overwhelmingly unhappy that he was not retained.

I think you misunderstood. If his defenses at LSU were feared for 3-4 years then he would have earned head coach, as of right now he doesn't deserve to be LSU's head coach. I would agree that his Ole Miss defense is not feared.

So explain why Bud Carson has yet to be a Head Coach after producing so many dominating defenses at VaTech?

It's not always so black and white...

I would agree right now I would not just give him the Head Coach in waiting title. I think after 5-6 years he produces solid tough defenses and then has the right mixture of charisma and recruiting prowess he could be in line for the Head Coach in waiting title. I mean a lot of times you can tell who will be a good head coach and have that "it" factor. I always thought that Bob Stoops would be a good coach from his time at UF. He is a big a-hole but he is a damn fine coach.

Being a good coordinator is not a prerequisite to being a good head coach. that's usually the path that people take because that's the natural progession of the job, but it's far froma requirement. You obviously want to see some measure of success before handing your team off to a guy, but success at coordinator is not it.

Les Miles was an NFL TE coach before he became the HC at OSU and then LSU. He was a mediocre OC at OSU before then. He is a mych better Head Coach than he was an OC or TE's coach and he's had to deal with adversity early and often.

On the other side of the coin, Jon Tenuta is one of the best DCs out there, but he is not a very good HC. He is (reportedly) much more comfortable with the X's and O's of the game than managing people and their issues, making game management decisions, etc.
