1962 American Football League Championship, Dallas Texans vs Houston Oilers. Game goes into OT, and, playing in Houston, Texans get to call the toss. With a strong wind blowing down the field, Hank Stram tells team captain Abner Haynes to choose to put the wind at their backs if they win the toss, which they do. But Haynes, assuming correctly that the Oilers will then choose to get the ball, says,"We'll kick to the clock." He did not realize that by saying "we'll kick", he had determined the first possession and deferred the choice of which goal to defend. Having been given the ball, the Oilers then took the wind. Fortunately for Haynes, the Texans defense bailed him out by getting a stop, and then the offense drove for the championship-winning FG. Just a true anecdote to show that these things really do happen.
