According to the linked ESPN article, Bobby will step down and be replaced by Jimbo Fisher. I always liked Bobby and wish him well in his retirement. Sources: Florida State coach Bobby Bowden to announce retirement Tuesday - ESPN
They just announced it on TV. Did not mention Fisher, but he will certainly take over. Of course Weis is available.
Seeing as they have to pay Jimbo 5 million if he wasnt the head coach by next season, I'm not surprised. Goodbye, old fart!
I'm sure he's not going to be given the benefit of the doubt as Bowden has, so he will have to produce in order to stay for LONGER than three
Bowden built a program from literally nothing. FSU was a boil on the butt of the football world and he turned it into a major college program. I know he has appeared an old fool in recent years but what he accomplished at FSU should never be discounted. They considered dropping football before he arrived.
Good post. :thumb: Prior to Bobby's arrival FSU was probably best known for having Burt Reynolds as a QB in the '50s. Like you said Bobby took the program to national prominence. Starting in 1987, the Noles began a 14 season run of a Top 5 ranking at the end of the season. Incredible. He also had a reputation for playing anyone, anywhere. Enjoy your retirement Coach. You've definitely earned it.
I'm not trying to discount his accomplishments. There comes a time for most (not all) coaches when they slip into a dry stretch of mediocrity. The good coaches drag themselves out of this. Bowden slipped and had three years (I'm counting from when Jimbo was hired with the stipulation that they would pay him millions if he were not head coach by next season) to get out of it. He hasn't done BAD in those years, but it isn't what the AD, fans, and University want. They kept him around and gave him several chances, but it was just time. The bad part is that Jimbo will have to work under his shadow for his entire career there, and they will not be as forgiving of mistakes as they were with Bowden
