I can't see 2008 USC being the media darling there were back in the mid-2000s. I heard one commentator say that 2008 USC was just as good as those teams in the mid-2000s, but I don't know about that.

The SEC has won back to back national championships, all over the media you hearing everybody raving that SEC is the greatest conference in the land, and rightfully so. Even last night, during the USC game, when Musberger was raving about how great USC's defense is, he still qualified it by saying he only knew of a few SEC defenses that were just as good.

Also, I've heard plenty of comments in the media that the Big 12 is the second-best conference behind the SEC.

Sure, USC got moved up to #1 after they soundly beat an ACC team that finished 9-3 last year. They got 33 first place votes by the AP while SEC teams got 28 (it will be interesting to see how that changes in the new poll that will be released today or tomorrow).

But I still don't see USC getting the media lovefest they got during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, when USC got the vast majority of first place votes in the AP each and every week.

That shouldn't happen unless Oklahoma, Missouri, LSU, Georgia, and Florida all don't live up to expectations, and USC plays spectacular for the rest of the season. And even if Oklahoma, Missouri, LSU, Georgia, and Florida all falter, if #8 Texas and #9 Auburn emerge as the best teams in their conferences, they should both get their fair of respect.

As for myself, I'd love to see a USC vs SEC (hopefully LSU) match-up for the National Championship.

USC is 4-0 against the SEC under Pete Carroll.

In 2006, they beat Arkansas 50-14 (same Arkansas team that finished 10-3, LSU beat them 31-26).

In 2005, they beat Arkansas 70-17 (LSU beat Arkansas 19-17 that year).

In 2003, they beat Auburn 23-0 (LSU beat Auburn 31-7 that year).

In 2002, they beat Auburn 24-17 (Auburn beat LSU 31-7 that year).

The SEC has beat Stoop's Oklahoma, Brown's Texas, Tressel's Ohio State, but has never beaten Carroll's USC. That needs to change, and I'd love to see it happen on the national scene in the National Championship Game.

No one did in this thread, but there were other polls where usc was picked by many Tiger forums members...

A few wise observers in that poll also pointed out that osu was a mirage.

Yeah, I hear you. It was just a joke. Clearly, JohnLSU's next post was very informative.
