Aside from Quinn going so late in the round, what do you guys consider the biggest surprise of the 1st round. I would pick Craig Davis going in the first round rather than in the middle of the second.
I had Davis going in the top of the 2nd round and I knew theat the Charges were high on both Bowe and Davis. He was only picked up 5-8 spots higher than I originally thought. However, I thought Ginn's draft stock plummeted him to the bottom of the 1st round after having to cut his Pro Day short because of nagging injuries. I thought he would have been the 4th WR taken or at #22 to the Cowboys.
Not surprised too much to see Quinn drop but I WAS surprised to see that Miami didn't take him. A wide receiver with little talent/health at quarterback isn't worth much!
I think Ginn at 9 was way to high, especially with Quinn still on the board. Keyshawn had a great point about why he'll be ineffective as a WR in the NFL & that is because he won't be able to get off the press. Ginn will be exciting in the return game and on plays like a bubble screen, but he's still got a long way to go before being a complete receiver.
Jaworski keeps showing footage of Ginn v. Leon Hall and Aaron Ross, and the speed difference is stunning. Keep in mind he runs good routes as well. Ginn at 9 isn't THAT big of a reach, if you assume he's healthy (e.g. not spending his entire career with an ankle injury.) There's no reason to factor Quinn into the equation if the team didn't like him. Nobody drafts a guy just because he's popularly rated somewhere. There were other folks that liked Beck more than Quinn, and with good reason. I think my biggest surprise pick (other than Ginn, which was a huge relief) is Harrell going to GB. I think that's an outstanding pick for them, and can free up AJ Hawk some more. I'm glad they didn't bend to popular sentiment and get Biggio...errr....Favre yet another WR. Folks seem to completely forget that they've got two legit WRs already.
Yea, I thought Ginn was a late first rounder, so it's not a huge reach, but I've heard the opposite about his route running.
Ginn may be fast but he is going to get beat up in the NFL. He isnt big enough to be the go to receiver and he is still injured right now and questionable for training camp. He is, by far, the biggest surprise pick of the draft. Miami screwed up royally taking him and their fans are none too happy about it. I dont blame them.
OSU didn't use him on a lot of short and out routes, so it's tough to say only from game film. He did a LOT of double moves and deep fades which are quite common in the NFL. OSU also had him run routes with the idea of getting into space, and letting Smith know to look for that, rather than a specific Colts-like precision route. Fins fans should have been infinitely more upset with picking Quinn. I agree about the concern about Ginn's durability, but he never really had that problem in college. His injury came when his idiot teammates Mestepey-ed him. With Chambers and Booker, they don't need him to be a 100 reception guy. Consider him like Reggie Bush in his versatility. Not quite as shifty but faster. Depending on the role (e.g. #2/#3 receiver and PR/KR), Ginn can add a ton of plays like Bush eventually ended up doing. I understand the rationale of taking him from the Fins perspective in that they don't plan on having a top 10 pick every year and when you do, you've gotta get a playmaker if he's available. It's not like Ginn was completely out of the blue. Hell, a lot of folks in Houston (foolishly) wanted them to draft Ginn at 10. Perfect world, I would have wanted Okoye to the Fins, but he went to the Texans which I like even better, so it all worked out. MAN! You have no idea. Here was the scene at my house while Miami was on the clock: Wife brought home some lunch, and I'm explaining how badly the Fins are about to screw up the franchise with that dope Quinn. She's eating, and I'm pacing around the living room, cursing like a sailor how they're screwing everything up. TV shows Quinn, I unleash some profanities at that ND pretty boy, and go back to pacing. This goes on for about 15 minutes. Goodell announces Ted Ginn, Jr. is the pick, and I can't speak. I'm just standing there, jaw dropped. Wife staring at me like she's not sure if I'm about to throw the table through the window or not. She's pretty happy because she detests Quinn too, but is cautious since she knows I love my dysfunctional Fins. It finally sunk in that they didn't take the Cutie QB and I shouted in jubilation. Wife seems genuinely relieved. Whether or not Ginn's any good wasn't really my first thought for the first few minutes. :hihi:
