This is just a theory, but given the obvious failings on the big stage could Texas be feeling inadequate and perhaps even impotent concerning their bovine manhood? Perhaps the BIG ten would be the viagra necessary to replenish the self respect and confidence necessary to once again finish and satisfy there unfulfilled fan base.
Honestly i think its all financial. They want Texas because no matter how much you or I, or anyone cant stand the Longhorns, they bring revenue. And i read somewhere that the Big 10 could offer about 12 to 13 million dollars to Texas in television money. That is also true for Notre Dame, they offered Notre Dame which could make them a hell of a lot more than their NBC contract, but the Gold Domers are a bunch of pansies, who think they are better than everyone else.
Got me thinking about our own expansion a few years back. I remember the SEC was interested in Florida State and I believe Miami was also offered. Both felt being a big fish in a littler pond was better for them, particularly Miami. I was wondering if any southwest conference teams were invited? Anyway Texas to yankee land sounds like a bad fit. Arkansas has said for years going to the SEC when they relied heavily on southwest recruits has cost them big time. Do all these texas recruits want to feel like a transplant? Are they willing to go?
Texas recruits primarily in Texas and sometimes Arizona and Oklahoma and Louisiana. If they were to go to the big 10 i don't think i would hurt recruiting at all. Plus they would go into the Big 10 being the top 3 in virtually every sport except ice hockey. If Texas does go, the Big 12 would obviously need to replace them, so maybe TCU gets in. Of course the Big 12 becomes even more irrelevant if they lose Texas, but i really don't think its going to happen, although, being that it is so much money they will have to listen to offers. Personally i think it will end up being Missouri, and Rutgers. Which doesn't really strengthen the Big 10, unless Rutgers can get the New York market to follow the Big 10.
Do they want to be the big 13? Not symmetrical. Might as well take Pittsburgh, to me they belong and they have a natural rival in Penn St. Some reason Missouri's name comes up a lot. Just more canon fodder. Tells me Notre Dame ain't going. Maybe they will get their 12th team and finally play a conference championship game. Nothing like a level playing field and a little attrition to keep things honest.
They are going to have to get 2 more teams even if 1 is Texas, it does sound strange though. I agree though i really do think all conferences should have to play a conference championship game. I also think they should restructure the SEC and move you guys to the East, or eliminate the conferences play a round robin schedule along with a championship game of the top 2 SEC teams. I feel that we the fans are being robbed from seeing LSU and Bama both in Atlanta. That would be sick.
If anyone assumed they went strictly by a road atlas when they were figuring out east and western sides, you can see it didn't happen. The barn sits almost due south of Knoxville, where as Vandy is almost due north of T-Town. See where this is going? SEC went beyond strained to keep these "Georgians" in the west. Even before the divisions our natural rivals have been based more in the west. LSU, Auburn, Mississippi, and even Miss St. Auburn has butted heads with Florida and Georgia, even Tennessee used to be an every year grudge match as well. As much as it would be cool to see LSU in Atlanta it's clear Auburn has got to go, and if their not willing we send them to the big twelve to replace Texas. Finally a place where their spread can do some damage.
Louisiana Tech and Hawaii are in the same conference. Sign with LA Tech and you get to go to Hawaii twice during your 4 year college career. Not a bad recruiting perk
