MADISON, Wis. — Is an all-time Wisconsin coaching icon coming out of retirement to make another run for the roses?

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez is expected to coach the football team in the Rose Bowl against Stanford on Jan. 1. Alvarez, who hasn't coached in seven years, scheduled a news conference at 10 a.m. CT on Thursday to address the departure of former coach Bret Bielema and presumably discuss his reprised role in charge.

Bielema, the hand-picked successor to Alvarez, left after seven seasons at Wisconsin and was officially introduced as the head coach at Arkansas on Wednesday. During his introductory news conference, Bielema inadvertently informed the masses about Alvarez's decision before it had been announced.

"I think he's actually coaching their bowl game," said Bielema, who took the Badgers to the past two Rose Bowls only to lose. "I just heard that before I came here, which will be awesome. They might finally win one. Everyone tells me he won three and I lost two."

A spot in the Rose Bowl is nothing new to Alvarez, who compiled a 118-73-4 record in 16 seasons at Wisconsin and helped guide the program from a Big Ten doormat into a perennial contender. During Alvarez's tenure, the Badgers played in three Rose Bowls and won each time. Wisconsin defeated UCLA in 1994 and 1999 and beat Stanford in 2000.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the Badgers' team captains this season reached out to Alvarez and asked him to coach the game, which will go on his record. Alvarez retired from coaching following the 2005 season and became the school's athletic director.

Alvarez, a College Football Hall of Famer, is so revered at Wisconsin that he even has a bronze statue outside one of the entrances to the football stadium.
