OK...If you've been a fan as long as I have (not giving my age out here, but I guarantee I was a Tiger fan before some of you were born), then in your opinion. Should the Tigers take the NC this year, is this the best LSU football team "ever"? I can think of a bunch of great teams and great players, 2003, 1958 for sure. But most never had enough gas in the tank to make it this far. But, does getting to and winning the NC alone make you the best? :tigereye::tigereye::tigereye::tigereye::tigereye:
Not really. Had some thing not gone our way in '03 we wouldn't have been in the Sugar Bowl. The 2nd half of last year was one of the best teams in a while.
I like 05 a lot... they had Katrina to deal with and something like 11 games in a row, but JaMarcus, Addai, Bowe, Buster, Doucet and you all know the defense... that's tough to contend with.
If this year's team wins the title tomorrow night they have to at least be mentioned in the conversation of "Best LSU football team ever". 1) National Champs? 2) SEC Champs 3) Set a school record for most points scored in a season 4) Beat Florida (top 10), Tennessee (top 25), Auburn (top 25), Alabama (bowl game), Ole Miss, Miss St (bowl game) AND Virginia Tech (ACC Champs/Top 10) this year 5) Dorsey won 4 individual awards 6) Winningest Senior class in LSU history. Pretty impressive stuff, but to me they have to win Monday night's title game. :crystal: :geaux: :crystal: :geaux: :crystal:
I didn't see the 58 team play, so I don't have that good a feel for it. The 69 team that didn't go to a bowl was outstanding. I thought the defense only allowed an average of 54 rush yds. per game, and their scoring defense was excellent also. And I got to see the classic 69 battle between Auburn and LSU in Tiger Stadium! The 03 team was a great one, it seems with a better defense than this team. The offense on this team seems better than the 03 offense. I agree, for half a season, the 05 team may have been the best, after the Fla. loss. Great offense and great defense. If this team had kept its pace from the first two games, it would have been legendary. But injuries hurt us. Oh well, let's just play our best game and try to win the :crystal: ! :geaux:
It's all subjective but they'd have to be in the top 3-5 of LSU teams with a win. If it's a dominating victory, I'd put them the best of my lifetime (Arnsbarger). If the team was healthy and there was a playoff system, I'd still feel good about their chances to win 3 games in a row for the championship. In '03, there were a couple of teams that would've been tough but the Tigers were on a big-time roll to end the season. The game with OU wasn't nearly as close as the score and they destroyed Georgia in the rematch from the early season win. All 3 of the Miles teams could make the argument that they would've been the team to beat in a playoff system. That might be stretching it a little but each team finished extremely strong and top-5.
Its really kind of a tough call, thats why I started the thread. A NCG surely would get you in there, but I don't think that alone makes you the best.
This team has the most talent and depth. If they have a dominate win they may be considered the better then the 2003 team. However, I do not like to compare teams. No way you can compare teams of over 30 years ago.
If this team plays defense like it did against VTech and those first few games (because it's finally healthy), and we beat Ohio State convincingly, then I contend this is the best team ever. Mainly due to a better OC putting the players in the best position possible to succeed. Undefeated in regulation.
This is an excellent question, and I don't really have a good answer. However, IF we win tomorrow night (I feel cautiously optimistic), we will become the "team of the decade," and I do know that we are enjoying our most success ever in any stretch of time. So, we might be at the pinnacle of our all-time success as a football program.
