Jim Brown was 10x bigger than most everyone he played against...lol He was great, but lets look at it in a little context.
Well, how do you look at it? Yeah everyone was smaller but was that his fault. If you go by that standard, then the best athletes will always be in the last ten years, especially in football.
As a kid growing up I got to occasionally see Brown on TV. I've seen all the greats since Brown and they are all a distant second. I'd group Simpson, Sanders, Payton, & Jackson in my top 5.
I guess the point is that you never know. How do I compare a guy who I never watched play live in a totally different era of football with the guys who still play or just retired. It's impossible, but you have to admit, Jim Brown was pretty damn impressive.
1. Jim Brown - had it all. 2. Healthy Gayle Sayers, go check some pro film on him. Best burst of speed ever, watch him hit the hole and come out the other side, gone. They didn't call him the "Kansas Rocket" for nothing. 3. OJ Simpson - consistently great for years 4. Barry Sanders - most agility, best cuts, head going one way, midsection another way. 5. Earl Campbell - didn't last as long at the top, 5 years, but what a 5 years, a bull. 6. Bo Jackson - might have rivaled Brown, better speed, as powerful, less balance, short pro career 7. Walter Payton - longevity champ, good speed and agility, lacked power of Brown 8. Emmit Smith 9. Eric Dickerson
Barry Sanders, O.J. Simpson and Bo Jackson. I would put Herschel Walker up there with those three on the college level but Walker had a decent but not spectacular pro career
Pure Running Back 1. Jim Brown Versatile Back 1. Marshall Faulk (12,300 rushing yards, 6900 receiving yards, 136 TDs)
