Remember when LSU had players named after communist dictators-(Nikita and Tito). I couldn't find any video links at all so I'll keep trying under the freedom of information act!
People who never saw Shaq play as a freshman or sophomore at LSU don't realize just how athletic he was when he weighed about 265. He could move! One game in the PMAC versus Tennessee, I think, Shaq blocked a shot in the paint, recovered it at the top of the key, dribbled it down the court, and windmill dunked it. It was pretty spectacular. Two visitors were sitting behind us and one of them said. "I can't believe you guys get to watch this every game."
JohnLSU, this was a quiz for you. I kind of expected you to provide one of your search updates. Around 1985, LSU did indeed have two players named (seemingly) after communist dictators: Nikita Wilson and Tito Horford. Most famous as "father of Al", Tito transferred to Miami. Both played in the NBA for a short while. I really couldn't find footage of either dunking, but I bet you can. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HseznUKNvsA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daSYTyiCXXw
I thought Tito left before ever playing for us. Remember him being on campus, but I thought it was real short lived.
True. The guy had a major attitude. It was a big recruiting battle and LSU won it, but it gave Horford an ego the size of Texas and he thought he was instantly the BMOC. LSU was scheduled to do an exhibition game in DeRidder, I think, trying to boost LSU's visibility around the state. Horford informed Dale that he wasn't going to go to some exhibition game. So Dale informed him that he could clear out and hit the friggin' road.
That's right! Much better memory than me. I just remember him huffing and leaving because he didn't get his way. After that year, I don't really remember hearing his name again until his son played for Florida. I wonder if he looks back and wishes he had done it differently now.
That was the same year we made the impossible run to the final four, right? I remember that being a wild year. We got Tito, lost Tito, everyone got injured or sick (everyone got chicken pox), and then surprised everyone in the tourney. Beat the top three seeds to get there. Showing my age, but that was an exciting year.
you beat me to it Red!! Scales was the man. when he was on, he could drop 20ft. jump shots in also. A head case unfortunately. Leonard Mitchell (Swat) was another great dunker.
I was looking for the video of that 80's team with Ethan Martin, Howard Carter, Rudy Maklin, Leonard Mitchel, Greg Cook, Willie Sims titled "Who dat talkin bout beatin dem Tigers". It was played to the tune of Double Dutch Bus. I have the words memorized and have the video on an old VHS tape. It's where the Saints got "Who Dat" from. It has a Rudy Maklin dunk over an Ole Miss player and a Leonard Mitchel dunk where he takes off from the foul line. Can't find the video on line, though.
