Without a doubt, that was the most awesome dunk by any LSU player ever. It's one of the most awsome dunks I've ever seen. Period. College or Pros. He did it like two times, but that Arizona one was the best because of the magnitude of the game. That was an awesome year. I was at that game and that brought the house down. The Shaq one off the rim would be like 1B though.
Amen, Red. I was lucky to finish and then work at LSU during the 1978-81 great years of LSU basketball. Here's one of my fav dunks, I bet you remember. 1978, #1 KY at LSU with Rick Robey, Jack Goose Givens and loaded. LSU was very young, but talented and scary good at times. Most crowded, loudest game ever, Tiger fans knew we had a chance. Our entire starting five had fouled out, and the game was in OT with time winding and LSU up by 1 or 2 I think, KY has the ball. Willie "The Black Jet" Sims, freshman, steals the ball and drives for a layup with pressure from the KY guard. The crowd is going nuts since a basket would likely seal the win. Sims lays it up too hard though, and the ball bounces off the backboard, high off the front of the rim. It seemed like forever as the crowd quieted. Out of nowhere it seemed, Floyd Bailey, aka "The Dubberly Dude" had trailed the play down the court, took the ball high off the rim and slammed it home! I can't describe the crowd and the roar. We hung on and beat #1 in OT with all 5 starters out. Bailey was a crowd and Dale Brown favorite. He was 6'6" and could jump! Amazing thing was his knees were terrible and he couldn't move fast enough to be a starter, so he was a sub that just happened to be in the game. The effort to get downcourt and slam that rebound back was one I'll never forget. I was there, and if you were there, you know what I'm saying.

This is non-LSU related, but worth of mention IMO: No list of dunks would be complete without mentioning the 360 that ULM (then NLU) guard Carloss Funchess dropped on Christian Laettner's Blue Devils in round one of the NCAA tourney. He and fellow teammate Anthony finished 1-2 in the NCAA dunk contest that year.
I wuz there in the student section and it was MAD I tell you. Beating the number-one team with all five starters fouled out. Floyd Bailey was a favorite all year . . . usually when he went into a game, we knew that game was over. But what an exclamation point he put on in that Kentucky game, which was very much in doubt. Kentucky just forgot about him. Jordy Hultberg was also one of the reserves that won that game.
I immediately thought of him when I saw the thread, Red, but I can't find any video links of him. In '78 when they won their first SEC title under Dale, he put the title-clinching game against 'Bama away with one of those windmill slams. Its the one in particular I'm looking for, but no luck so far. Macklin was a fair dunker for his time as well, not the frequent flyer Scales was, but he made the most of his opportunities.
Jose Vargas had a bad to the bone behind the head dunk for the Tigers that I just can't forget. Wish I had a vid to link.
No doubt - DeWayne Scales. His Freshman year at Home against Tennessee, he had a breakaway & he "Threw Down" one from the foul line. First time I ever saw him play. Awesome Baby!
In his freshman year, Shaq had one against Texas in the game that was played at the Summit in Houston (now it's Joel Osteen's church). This was the same team that had Chris Jackson and Stanley Roberts. Texas also had three future first round picks, guards or swing players, on their team. So the game was very up tempo. On a break one of the LSU guys took a 3 from the right wing. It was short and came back off the rim out past the lane parallel to the end line. Shaq was running hard and blasted off, grabbed the rebound with his right hand and slammed it back in one motion. It was incredible. They showed it over and over at the game. Shaq still hadn't turned 18 and wasn't as bulky as he is now and could really get up. Despite all the talent at the game and how raw he was, it was obvious who had the most potential. I think he finished with a triple double (points, rebounds and blocks) and CJ had 53 in that game.
