Does the LSU fan base consider Les Miles the best coach they have ever had? Who are the top 3 or 4 coaches in Tiger history?
Don't know about the best ever but when it's all said and done, CLM will the winningest coach in LSU history.
You decide. Based on winning percentage Hal Hunter was the greatest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LSU_Tigers_football#Head_coaches
Sorry gunlap I didn't answer your 1st question but i agree with offshore trash, to soon to call him the greatest but he for sure is on of already. Welcome to the TF too.
How do you define "best"? Kind of hard to overlook the work Paul Dietzel did in his first 5 seasons in Baton Rouge. Sure, having Billy Cannon helped, but Paul inherited a sub-.500 team that couldn't come close to filling Tiger Stadium (unless they played Tulane) and made it a dominant force. He was pretty innovative, too. He's my choice.
Miles may be the best coach LSU has ever had yet he would rather be at Michigan (see contract clause). Saban was a great coach and he left. It doesn't seem to me (an outsider) that LSU is the ultimate job for a top notch coach. That would be frustrating to me as a fan.
Dietzel & Saban both have won us NC's. They have to be on the list. Once Miles wins us one in about a month, he'll be there too - if he isn't already.
Dietzel and Saban need to be one and two b/c of nc's. I would put miles ahead of maclendon. if miles can win against ohio st, i'd put saban and miles even and really at that point saban dietzel and miles would all be tied at #1. the difference being miles still has a future ahead of him to become #1 but it's too early now to put him higher than 3 or 4.
the coach doesn't matter. we have top notch talent every year in this state and an attractive setting for kids to play football. unlike ohio which has defectors to michigan and other schools the majority of kids here stay in state and LSU could be and is a power from the majority if in state kids sprinkled with a few other kids around the south. it would be frustrating to me as a fan if i perceived my coach to be so wonderful only to have him lose two straight national championships to SEC coaches. i would worry about this game instead of posting inflammatory nonsense to try to rile us up.
Hard to say who was the best but Bill Arsparger, often overlooked, was one of the better coaches we ever had. Wasn't there long but had good success and in talking to players and other coaches from that era they said no one knew more footbatll than Arnsparger.
