You're right. I don't know much about soccer, but how in the hell can they afford to pay this guy 1 million dollars per week for 5 years. If I were an NFL player I would ask for mo' money. Suddenly a $40M contract doesn't seem that impressive.
It turns out that the $250 million total is deceptive. He will only be making in the single digit millions per year to play soccer. The rest of the $250 million is based on a perceived boost to Beckham's global endorsment and branding as a result of him now being the States. In comparison to the high paid American athletes, Beckham really won't be making that much as an athlete.
If this is the case then it is B.S. for anyone to report this guy has a contract worth $250M. You can't contract a "percieved boost".
I personally like soccer, but I can tell you the reasons people don't like it. Most Americans see soccer as 22 European sissies running around a field for 90 mins, kicking a ball back and forth, and only actually scoring a couple of times, and to make things worse they fall down and writhe in agony any time someone comes close to touching them.
Soccer Alex is a game usually played by people of questionable sexuality or foreign people. Its very popular in US youths because it requires very little skill to play. But usually by age 8 or so, most American males realize that the sport is quite silly and serves no purpose. Also the games usually end in 0-0 ties and they are fantastic for people with insomnia. Avoid attending games overseas because due to the sheer failure to entertain, the fans often become drunk and riot. PS - Those Soccer fans, Lighten up its a joke. Yes I know you need to be able to run to play soccer.. And yes I know its the most popular sport in the world. Yes I know you need to be a good athlete to play it at high levels. Yes I know that at times some actually scores a goal.
