If OU beats Oklahoma State in a very close game and Texas demolishes Texas A&M (and believe they will try), Texas could get the nod in the BCS and face Missouri in the Big 12 CG. Oklahoma would close the gap on #2 Texas by the computer polls bump alone. It's up to the voters at that point. Isn't that what the BCS is for! Florida easily goes to #2 in the BCS with a win over Florida State and Alabama.
I think we have a chance to jump Texas tomorrow since we destroyed Tech. If not, I think we have a great chance to jump them next week if we beat #12 ranked OSU on the road. The Longhorn argument is that the beat us head to head. Here is my argument............................ I don’t know why it is so hard to understand that Texas beat OU on October 11th and then lost to another team on November 1st which OU destroyed by 44 points on November 22nd. The tides have turned for OU and Texas. Obviously Texas is not better than us at this point in the season b/c we just beat a team that beat Texas. I don’t care about home game arguments, neutral field arguments, or road game arguments. If Texas was still the team that beat us on October 11th, they would have beat the team that we beat on November 22nd. That is not too hard to understand. Our 44 point win over Tech proves beyond a reasonable doubt that at this point in the season OU is better than Texas. If the season ended on October 11th, I’d personally vote to send Texas to the National Championship game. Unfortunately Texas screwed that with their loss to Tech. islstl Both arguments are valid in my opinion. I agree with them, and I also agree with mine. What are your thoughts on the two arguments?
If OU had struggled to beat Tech, then I would say Texas. At that point, the only thing you could base it on was head to head matchup. Texas would have lost by a hair at Tech, and you guys would have barely beat them at home. So that would have been considered a draw. In fact, probably a victory of 10 points or less over Tech tonite would have me saying Texas over OU. But you can't ignore the game tonite. You just can't. If voters truly thought Tech was the #2 team in the land, then OU just blew out of the 2nd best team in the nation. Tech looked more like Iowa State tonight. Another thing, the defense dominated what everyone including myself thought was an unstoppable offense. That's huge. You guys did it on both sides of the ball. BTW, my human polls gave OU somewhat of a bump to jump Texas, but not a full bump. The reason being is I listened to ESPN talking heads all saying Texas deserves to be ahead of OU (except for Mark May I believe). These talking heads have more sway in the voters rankings than you would care to believe. OU could easily be 2nd in the BCS tomorrow. I just believe they fall a tad short. The voters are gonna ask you guys to bring it one more time next week and then reward you when it matters most.
Of course this is your argument and I think OU is playing as well as anyone right now. But there is a reason you play the whole season. If not Ole Miss would be the Western champion right now and may be playing USC in the title game. Or should we throw out that OSU lost -- I mean, it was at the beginning of the season. Texas lost on the last play of the game on the road. You lost on a neutral field to the team that lost on the road. Thats what decides it for me.
Another compelling argument. I just believe that Texas has regressed a little mainly due to their defense, whereas OU has stepped it up big time on D. I know you predicted OU tonite, but you surely didn't see Tech being held to little or nothing by the OU D, did you? I go back to my old formula, if Texas and OU play at a neutral field, OU wins. They are better than Texas is right now.
I thought TT's yards per play would be decent but their overall output would be well below average due to OU being able to run and control the clock. I fully understand why people would put OU ahead of Texas and I will not be upset if it ends up that way because I like Oklahoma. I just have a problem with people that neglect the whole season and favor the hot team. I don't understand the logic behind that. Perhaps if this was the NCAA tournament...but it is not. If we do it that way shouldn't USC be #1 or #2? Of course not, because they did in fact lose at Oregon State and that game means something -- to me, anyways. That's my opinion but I can see why others think the way they do.
The ESPN B-Team (May and Holtz) threw their support behind OU. I predicted OU 48 Tech 31. If you go off the history of the OU/Tech game in Norman, Techs 21 points fits right in where it should be. They have only average in the teens at Norman on offense. Of course, everyone thought this Tech team was better that Tech teams of the past. Winning on the road is not easy.
Well one of my key points was whether Leach would try to be at least somewhat balanced with the run and the pass. OU stopped it early and Leach abandoned it. Game over.
