This weekend is Championship Sunday in the NFL. It's arguably the best day in pro football, and the games usually end up being more entertaining than the Superbowl (minus the commercials). Why can't college football do the same? I understand that the BCS is looking to change their format to the "Plus one", and I like the change. Sure i'd like to see a bigger playoff format, but I really don't see that happening any time soon. Along the same lines, I do enjoy the bowl system. I know they are considered "exhibitions" by a lot of people, and we see a lot of bad teams competing in obscure bowl games.....but it is tradition. I like seeing Ohio U play Tulsa, or whoever, on December 19th. It's the holiday bowl season and I never want to lose that. That being said, one of the biggest problems I have with the current BCS championship game format, is that it is 35-45 days after the teams complete their regular season. It's absolutely ridiculous. The Plus One model will only shorten that layoff by a week. My solution: Rather than using 2 of the BCS bowl games as semi-final matchups, with the winners moving on to play the "plus one" a week or two later.....why not have an NCAA semi-final Saturday around the 3rd weekend in December at 2 of the usual BCS venues? The winners would then move on to play in a BCS bowl game on or soon after Jan 1st. The losers of those two games could go on to play each other in another BCS bowl game. Seems like we would get better football (with the teams not sitting around for over a month), and the NCAA and BCS would clean up. The promotion of such a semi-final day would be huge. Revenues would be huge, and they wouldn't be competing with the NFL playoffs. Example: This year you would have had: LSU vs. Stanford at Glendale, AZ Saturday, Dec 17 Alabama vs. Oklahoma State at Miami, FL Saturday Dec 17 The Fiesta bowl then holds their normal game on Jan 1. The Orange bowl holds their normal game on Jan 1. Winner of LSU/Stanford plays winner of Alabama/Ok St in Sugar Bowl for the National Championship sometime after Jan 1. Loser of LSU/Stanford plays loser of Alabama/Ok St in Rose Bowl on Jan 1. (Obviously Rose bowl officials wouldn't be happy with this) Thoughts? What is wrong with this scenario? 0 Back to top
Would be better, but still is pretty lacking. The best sport in America deserves to have the best post season. I say cut out the non conference games, make every conference play a championship game in order to be considered. play a 18 team playoff to conclude the season. SEC Big 10 Big 12 ACC Big East Pac 12 all get their champions an automatic bid. Then you get 12 wild cards selected by an independent selection committee. No conference can more than 4 participants. All major conference champions would receive a bye, that makes 6 games the first week of the playoffs to be played at the higher seed's home field. so week one of the playoffs would look like this. 18 seed @ 7 seed 17 seed @ 8 seed 16 seed @ 9 seed 15 seed @ 10 seed 14 seed @ 11 seed 13 seed @ 12 seed Next week the 6 conference champions would host a game at their home field. 18 seed or 7 seed winner @ 1 seed 17 seed or 8 seed winner @ 2 seed 16 seed or 9 seed winner @ 3 seed 15 seed or 10 seed winner @ 4 seed 14 seed or 11 seed winner @ 5 seed 13 seed or 12 seed winner @ 6 seed Week after will be held in the major bowl games. (lets say the top 6 teams advance.) 6 vs. 1 Rose 5 vs. 2 Sugar 4 vs. 3 Orange then the winners (lets say the top 3 advance again) would play in the 1 major who host the championship. highest seed advances to the championship so you would have 3 vs. 2 in the Fiesta and then 1 vs. the winner in the Fiesta assuming the championship rotates every year as it does now. Then the teams that didn't make the tournament can play in their meaningless bowl games like they do every year. If this was easy for me to come up with, why can't they come up with it.
I agree more teams should be included, but that isn't going to happen in the near future. I was just trying to tweek the soon to be instituted "plus one".
