That looks to be a likely scenario if they can come to an agreement. The plus 1 may be as far as they will go, if they even agree to that. I still wanna see the top 4 BCS teams make it and pitted against each other in the New Year's Day bowl games (1 vs 4, 2 vs 3). Then the winner meets up a week later in the BCS NC.
I really have to disagree with the article's take on margin of victory. However that's weighted in any rankings needs to take the relative rankings of the two teams into account. It's ridiculous to suggest that LSU beating a D-III school by 50 points is as impressive as a close win over a Top 15 team. Or likewise that Boise blowing out everyone else by 30 is superior to an SEC team winning closer games against 4-5 teams in the Top 10-20 every year. If that's the case why even bother scheduling tough OOC games? Just schedule a full slate of cupcakes to get those computer "style points".
This is exactly the system I had been talking to my friends and labmates about. No need to ditch the BCS entirely, but use it to rank the top 4. Far less likelihood of an undefeated getting screwed, and the Boise's and TCU's of the world get to show us how good they really are against top competition.
You're still dealing with the actual voters, however, and if you noticed, TCU won impressively and dropped in the standings. So style points against inferior opponents don't actually hold water necessarily. It still comes down to scheduling enough tough teams, and TCU and Boise State are going to find out AGAIN this season that their schedule is still not up to snuff.
It's not. Was taken out after the year Auburn went undefeated and didn't get in, I think. Nootch knows, I remember him posting it. Good point. In that regard it IS still "in".
Actually it was after the LSU/USC debacle in 2003. Their was so much stink over it, that the BCS was compelled to tweak their formula and that was one of the changes they made. The computers still use SOS.
Right, I was responding to the point the author was making that the computer rankings are somehow illegitimate because margin of victory isn't included. I'm saying if it is, the rankings of the two teams should be used to weight its contribution. So for example a blowout over a cupcake should get no MOV points, but blowing out #1 on the road would be included. And while you're still dealing with human voters, don't underestimate the PC factor. The sports media would love to have the huge "story" of a non-BCS conference team in the NC, and they can still heavily influence the human polls even without the AP poll included anymore. Nobody remembers how UGA blew out Hawaii in the Sugar in '07, but everybody remembers the hook-and-lateral and Statue of Liberty that got Boise the win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta.
I like the idea of the +1 - BUT then we will end up with the 4th team crying and complaining Its a tough call, I say if they do a playoff system, they need to roll a 6 team playoff, the conference champion of the 5 major conferences, and one BCS buster. Even in this case, TCU & Boise, one of the 2 would be out - So its just too tough to call. And if going undefeated against a bunch of cupcake teams and winning 2 big games (Boise St.) Puts you number 1 in the polls, then at what point does a big school (Texas) decide to become independent and run a schedule similar to Boise St. so they can compete for the National Championship EVERY Season This wasnt all directed at you Stacey0 i just happend to run off while replying to the +1 system...sorry
