Bastrop isnt a bad team for LSU have a pipeline with cause they got some great talent on their team for the next couple of years
Brock & Booty were both over 6 foot. Mackey apparently just isn't tall enough to be a D1 QB. Thus, his arm strength is irrelevent. Shyrone Carrey was more like 5'7, but he also didn't play QB in college. My guess is that Mackey doesn't project to have the altheticism to be great at any other position in college, and just isn't tall enough to be a QB.
Mackey is listed at 6'1/2" on scout and 5'11" on rivals. Probably is 5'11". Isn't Drew Brees 6'0". Brees is not to bad a QB. Didn't he make all pro in some league called the NFL? Just sayin since it looks like we're only recruiting a QB this year for depth (since it wasn't a real good year for QB's and next years class is supposed to be much better) wouldn't have minded Mackey being that guy. Shyrone Carrey and Skyler Green aren't good camparisons to Mackey. Mackey is not nearly as short as those two and is a true QB and not just an athelete (RB, return guy, WR) playing the position.
Of course the trend is to the bigger stronger armed QB and J. Russell, the best example of that was just the #1 pick of the draft and just graduated from here. But I hope we are not just looking for the next JR because we might not ever find him. I just hope they gave Mackey a good hard look and aren't just writing him off solely because of his size. Because he does have a lot of talent. I'm not delusional :insane: and do trust CLM :milesmic: and staffs opinion of who we should make an offer to more than who i think we should make an offer to.
I hope height isn't a deciding factor as to why he isn't being offered a scholarship. Height doesn't matter. If you're good then you're good. Just look at Drew Brees or last year's Heismann winner, Troy Smith.
I have to agree, this ain't the NFL here. College QBs needs some wheels under them especially in the SEC. I hope he stays at QB and goes to La. Tech if not to LSU. I really think this kid has "IT" to be a QB.
Troy Smith is a good example. Remember, we are not trying to win the Superbowl but an NCAA championship. There have been many great college qb's who just didn't have it for the NFL. Who cares. Sometimes heart can go a long way in football (Hester). As for as coaches always knowing better, that's not completely true. I played with a guy who was never recruited, came to a D2 school, transferred to AU and got drafted in the 5th rd. Crazier than that was that we had a better linebacker who stayed behind at the small school. 1 more guy on the team who played pro. 3 guys in one area missed by the scouts. There are immeasureables.
Well, we all should. LSU players getting drafted high & doing well in the NFL = a lot of positives for our university, including being a big boost to recruiting. But it has to be combined with at least some degree of good measurables. There are also guys that develop late. Of course no coach is perfect, but they are right way more often than they are wrong.
