And the Spartans remain high on the list of Antonio Bass, a four-star athlete from Jackson High School, who many thought was ready to commit to Michigan.

But Bass' father, Antonio Bass Sr., said Tuesday MSU is still very much in the running after Bass visited East Lansing and talked to coach John L. Smith over the weekend.

"John L. said, point blank, that they want Antonio to play quarterback," Bass Sr. said. "That's a big issue for us."

Bass Sr. said the Wolverines are recruiting Bass as a wide receiver or defensive back, not as a quarterback.

"I told him if he wants to be a receiver and only get in as a quarterback in certain situations, in whatever packages they put in, then he should go to Michigan," Bass Sr. said. "If he wants to play quarterback he should go to one of the other schools.

    "It's as simple as that."

Virginia Tech, another finalist for Bass, is also recruiting him as a quarterback.

Bass expects to make a decision between the three in the next two weeks.
