I just got home and I am still fuming, but I cannot imagine how mad Mainieri must be. He puts Ott to save/win the game. He throws a meatball on an 0-2 count and gives up the lead. Okay, fine. **** happens. Then Ott crumbles. Crap. What else can a coach do? Your great closer, and school-record save leader can only get one out and gives up 3 runs. I was shocked to see how fast his replacement warmed up. Bottom of the ninth and UF gives LSU a chance with an error, and Mainieri took a HUGE chance and let Ty Ross bat, even though he has struggled at the plate all year (and even botched a bunt earlier in the game). He comes through big-time. Man on second, no outs, one run game. You have had 21 successful sacrifice bunts on the year. To anyone who says not to bunt here: this is why you don't coach. I don't care if you have Mark McGuire in his steroid hey-day. You bring that guy to third base. Not to mention, UF's 3B just made an error, and bunting to him puts pressure on him not to make two mistakes in an inning. Follow that with two strikeouts looking. His players didn't execute, and that MUST be the hardest thing for a coach to swallow. That is 8 errors for Nola on the season. That is the most amazing stat to me.
Quality post!! What is amazing to me is the youth that is playing so good, only to see some of the vets just playing bad/poorly..
We're gonna need some fielding changes, ala 2009. Hopefully with the same results. On a positive note: I heard the Paul Crane(I'm pretty sure it was him?) say on the CST broadcast that it was another record crowd at the Box. The tremendous fan support is a BIG reason why we have the best all-around baseball program in the country. Way to continue to take it to another level Tiger fans!
