not even during absolute ideal conditions. it’s simply not wide enough. but eventually it will be accessible. that’s a section that will be a part of the Morganza to the Gulf project. they started on Pointe Aux Chenes side working this way. this is a section that is not yet complete so it’s lower and narrower than most. but once complete, BIG dump trucks will be able to drive entire length of it.
as a kid in school i was always so jealous of kids on the island. if wind blew the right way, the road to the island would go under water and then kids got to miss school.
Use to have a hook up who would let us fish at the wildlife and fisheries station there. There was a cut into the marsh and the big reds would sit there. You could fish on the canal bank and absolutely kill the reds, black drum and flounder.
There is a spot on Hwy 1 a little past Fourchon on the way to Grande Isle. You might have seen it before. It's where there is a double curve in the road. There are always people fishing there and now and then somebody will catch a big red or drum but there is lots of stuff under water to snag your hook. Just across the road and across the canal there was a fantastic spot. There was a little hand ferry but it was locked and you really weren't supposed to go to the other side where the fish were. There was a camp way back in the marsh and at 8 AM the caretaker would show up to check the camp. If he saw you on the other side he would run you off and threaten to call the law or something. I had a canoe I would bring and we would get there just as it was starting to turn daylight, murder the redfish (most in the 5 to 8 pound range) and be gone before 8.
That's what I told the guy the one time he showed up early. He pointed to the keep out sign and asked me if I knew how to read. I said "No bruh, I went to LSU."
