It's because Saban is the greatest coach who ever lived since the Barr!! and any player he wants is going to go to Mecca (Bama) How could any recruit honestly consider anyone elses' offer? It's just Saban being better, smarter, faster than poor Miles. Bama is assuming their rightfull place atop the SEC. Anyone who spends anytime on a bama board knows this.

It would be better if we would just resign ourselves to our rightfull place in mediocraty.

There are several reasons I think this would be a flawed strategy whether or not Saban is doing it.

    1. There is always the chance that the recruits will be impressed on their visits and develop second thoughts, or if they would have developed second thoughts anyway for some reason at the last minute, that those second thoughts would then have the weight of real practical options behind them. Anything can happen. A player could take a recruiting visit and have a good time at a party, meet a girl, and change his mind. A player could decide some recruiter or staff at his lock school said something offensive, or looked at him wrong, or mixed up his name, or seems to be favoring another recruit to start over him, and begin considering the other schools he visited.

    2. It sends the wrong message about how to win. If players come into the system being told that tricks are the way to get ahead, they may focus less on no-nonsense hard work. If Saban is going to win by tricking other schools with fake recruits, maybe that player should seek to win a starting job by getting the starter to eat some spoiled food, or messing with his equipment, not by hard work in practice. If Saban tells a recruit to lie to other schools, why shouldnt that recruit later lie to his own school about whether he broke team rules, etc. It all just fosters the wrong mentality.

    3. It might offend some recruits who are asked to do it. Most people feel akward acting as spys or sabateurs. Even if they politely decline, or even seemingly happily accept and go through with it, it still might change how they think of Saban, reducing his moral authority in their eyes and their own enthusiasm. Reduced enthusiasm could lead to the players becoming poor advocates to the school for future recruits even if they themselves sign. There are a lot of ways to motivate that involve the schools spirit becoming something all-holy or the coach being a model of strict authority. All that goes to crap if an early impression is that the coach is using a bunch of cheap tricks.

You make some good points there.

Me, I just don't think Saban would do something like that.
