A few comments: 1. We must be deep at quarterback and we must stagger the classes. It would not surprise me to see Kiel redshirted in his and LSU's best interests if Randall or Rivers steps up in the spring to be a capable reserve quarterback. Separating Mettenberger and Kiel by another year enhances both of their eligibility. 2. Quarterbacks will transfer, so will running backs and any other position where there is a talent logjam. Who can blame them? 3. Talent logjams are an indication of a top-recruiting team and are not entirely bad things. We must have attrition to keep under the 85. Best have it at deep positions .
1. Kiel knows he may Red-Shirt and has said so. 2. Happen all the time, everyone thinks they are better than the starter. But Les has played 82 players this year, if you can help, you play. Looks to be around 60 of those players returning for next year. 3. You may see a change of pace at QB with Jerrard Randall. The thing is with the 85 limit we played 82, with many being Walk-Ons. Les has done a great job of mixing the older, Freshmen and W/O players. :tigereye:
Agreed. Sometimes it's best to get a player on the field early to prepare them, but I'm in the camp that feels it's more benefitial to have a QB redshirt his freshman season. It gives them an entire year of learning the playbook and experiencing the speed of the college game in practice rather than getting a taste of it in "trial by fire" (see: Lee, Jarrett).
Amen! Lee was put into a terrible situation. Thrown to the wolves essentially. who knows to what extent this impacted his career. Thats why I think Les owes JL and we the fans owe JL. And its why I'm not happy to see his minutes evaporate since Bama, but I'm not going ballistic because there seems more to the story about JLs reduced minutes than it just being a case of Les shafting him. In almost every instance at a big time program like LSU and league full of tough defenses, it would be best for a freshman QB to redshirt, or at least not step on the field with a game in doubt. Impatient, confident teenage QBs may have a different view though.
