I don't believe a 5-star QB goes in willing to just be a backup for more than 1 season (following a redshirt season that is). I have little doubt that we'll have Mett, Randle, Rivers and Keil all on the same team for no more than 1 season to be honest. Mett will be in the top 2 reguardless, IMO. If there is little or no seperation between Kiel, Rivers and Randle, he may accept a redshirt and sold on the idea that a full solid season in the program will do him a great deal in the long run. Bottom line: Kiel might be the only one in the bunch that would be "ok" with being 4th on the depth chart next season
Kiel was sold on the fact that we lose both of our senior QB's. Any top rated QB has enough confidence in his ability to think he can compete for the starting job from day one. I guarantee Miles told him he would compete for the starting job knowing full well that he would probably not win it. But look out after he gets a years experience under his belt.
If some of us thought Les would have a hard time working JJ back into things with JL undefeated, he'll earn his money even more keeping this talented stable of QBs happy.
I favor a one QB system, with backups only getting minutes in blowouts or end of games. Will be interesting to see how Les handles this much QB talent if they actually live up to expectations. I doubt any highly touted QB recruit would commit to a program if they thought they'd have to share minutes once they establish their bona fides on the field.
You didn't read my earlier post. All top recruits are confident in their abilities. Most are looking for early playing time. LSU was a big draw to Keil because of our losses from this years team at QB and how much returning talent we will have next year on offense. No doubt he thinks he has a shot at starting. Any 5 star recruit would think that.
I meant that more in terms of how Les will handle an abundance of wealth, assuming they pan out. I agree--the star HS QB will expect to start and get all the quality minutes if they are also burning it up in college. Such a QB would not be happy with any coach that makes them split duties no matter how good they are. If these QBs are all as good as some people are already saying they are, then Les will earn his dollars keeping everyone happy.
I prefer a one QB system too but the two QB system has served us/Miles well. I don't see it changing. Good point about assuming they pan out but Les apparently has a knack for working through this depth cause the players sure seem to buy into it. One good thing about it is they play enough to be "seen" but limited PT reduces wear/tear and chance of injury. End of the day, they can "make a name for themselves" and not be damaged goods come draft time.
Miles is not running a true two QB system (like Jones/Lyons or Woodly/Miley) where they alternate series. Miles really has a starter and a back up where the back up only plays when needed.
