Thanks for your respect kluke, I kind of missed my own point on the OKC comparison. But, too late to take it back. I shouldn't have said it that way.

I just think that this shouldn't be just passed off as a type of rival prank. I equate the guy's use of chemicals with the use of chemicals by terrorists.

After all, it was a chemical attack on a very public place that was meant to harm a whole, very large group of people whom the criminal didn't even know. Like terrorism, the action was taken to prove some twisted point on a very large, nationally public scale without regard to to the health and safety of an anonymous public.

It shouldn't matter to a jury that the guy used a herbicide and not a dirty bomb or something worse. It shouldn't matter that corrective action was taken to mitigate the contamination and that the threat to public safety was minimized. Phoning in a bomb threat is a crime even if the bomb squad only finds a shoe box with a butterfinger wrapped in duct tape in it.

I hope the court system realizes how serious this threat was and charges him appropriately.

As funny as that Volnation thread was, I also hope the public doesn't think it was a college prank gone too far.

Yeah, ANYONE can buy ammonium nitrate- at least back then. Now it's called something else but still nitrogen. On the other hand, Spike can only be purchased with a pesticide license issued by a State. Not the only way for someone to get their hands on it obviously, but no one can buy it without a license.

    Leaching.

I agree with Steve's point. This post is an expansion of what I was saying in #104. This was a serious crime. And those who say its just of couple of trees and the 'tree huggers' need to calm down are wrong. The trees are like the visible part of an iceberg, the real big problem is down below.

This was not a couple of college kids in a post game drunken moment of stupidity. This was an act committed after week of planning by an ex cop. I have to believe that somewhere in the last 30 years he's heard that chemicals like this are dangerous. It is reasonable for us to believe he knew or should have known the consequences of his action. The fact that he used massive amounts of the poison shows a disregard for the safety of the public - at least the Auburn public.

To me the Iron Bowl part of this story is a distraction of the main point. This guy knowingly and in a premeditated fashion committed a serious crime in complete disregard for the safety of the public. If not for his moronic bragging alerting responsible people, it could have been worse.

His actions when he was released from jail show him to be unrepentant. If I were on the jury I would have no problem putting this guy away for the maximun allowed.

But I still love the VolNation thread.

This guy wasn't an eighteen year old kid he was a sixtyone year old man. This shouldn't be treated as a kids prank. I don't like au or ua but this isn't about that. This was domestic terrorism committed aginst Americans on americian soil. People say it's only a tree. What's next if this slides. Fishing is bad so kill all the fish in the lake? Hunting is bad so.... What about poisioning ground water. Sounds silly but how silly is naming your kids crimson and bear and your dogs roll and tide. Extremism must be confronted on all fronts. History teaches us that. All kids should be taught in class what going too far means and this case is example #1. Parents should teach this but what did this dude teach his kids his whole life. Damn shame.

    FIFY,

Trying to get this sort of thing done in a school is an extremely slippery slope my friend. Leaving this sort of morale education to a teacher who may or may not have the same values you abide by could backfire. The other question is who decides how far is too far? Is it eggs on the house or a bag of burning dog crap? Water balloons off the bridge or tennis shoes pulled across a dark road with some fishing line? See where I'm going?

Yes sir I do. But I remember sportsmanship being taught early in pe class. You didn't take the game back to the classroom. Parents should teach this but when the parent is wrong like dyke where else will kids hear about sportsmanship. I don't like the political talk from teachers brain washing kids to left wing ideas but basic sportsmanship should be stressed at a very young age. It's ok to pull for a team but it's only a game sort of thing.
