He is a good coach, but grossly overrated IMO (before this debacle of a season). Spurrier ran the SEC slate 3 times. Couldn't beat FSU most years (Tubby wouldn't even play them). Good, not great.
Tubs is a pretty good coach but as far as coaching goes he has yet to face severe adversity on due to their performance on the field until now. Some handle adversity well and others, well... He does what any good coach does and that is surround himself with good coaches. Im thinking that was a bigger deal when we all previously thought.
Auburn may be a tougher place to coach than LSU. I think our fans are harder on coaches, but they fire people midseason over there. Look at Tony Franklin and remember how Terry Bowden went? Hell, he had five convincing winning seasons and was fired in game 6 after a 1-5 start in his 6th year. At LSU, we used to give people 2-4 awful seasons. Of course, that'll never happen again. Yeah, I don't normally think of Tubberville as great. But when I compare him to all the other coaches in college, he's easily one of the top 25 best. Of course, great or good is subjective, so I can see how someone might disagree with great. But I'm judging him based on what he's done in the toughest conference and against all other coaches. He may be headed straight down now, but he's finished 1st or 2nd in the West all but two years since he's been there. That's strong. Hell, he's got three wins against Florida and they don't even play them every year. His 5-1 record against top 5 teams is awesome as well. And hey, he hasn't faced that much adversity because his teams have always WON. He has faced adversity though, he was almost fired a few years back. Remember them talking to Petrino behind his back in the middle of the season after he had like three straight SEC losses before turning it around? How'd he follow that up? Undefeated season. By the way, I was asking how many undefeated seasons Spurrier had at Florida in the whole regular season (not just SEC games). As an Auburn coach, you don't truly face adversity until you start losing to BAMA. And he's got six in a row against them right now. Okay, I'm sick of kissing Tubby's Azz. I need my head examined. Anyway, here's an article stating the opposite case. An ignorant article if you ask me that has a comment about our coach as well: http://community.foxsports.com/blogs/Rob2006/2008/10/23/Tommy_Tuberville_Firing_Countdown_Begins
