I think many, if not most cops are A-holes. Seems to attract a certain type lose.....erhhhh ...person. And, I have two FB "friends" who are retired law enforcement. They post the worst, lunatic fringe stuff. Frequently with outrageous racial content. Having said that, community policing is a dream. Too many self centered butts. And, as, McTiger asks, Why didn’t some of the 911 callers step in and solve the problem w/o resorting to calling the police.
I don't know how big the community you live in is, but here, the cops I know are generally OK. But its a small town. I'll bet big city cops get jaded in a hurry. Were the A-hole cops you know veterans, or were they A-holes before they were cops?
That and the fact that I don't know this drunk guy asleep in his car. If I wake him up to offer a ride home how do I know he won't get belligerent and start some shit with me. I'll just call the Chief of the Community Committee.
as a former law enforcement officer and former military, my anecdotal response is us/them. i knew that beyond anything else i was going home to my family that night. period. i didn't see the officers you are generalizing except for the few.
I love it when people act like cops, who risk their lives some times for a fucking traffic stop, should just wait to get stabbed or shot before they retaliate. These same people would kill me in a second if I threatened their life and they had the means to end me.
I don’t know, but I’m in a small town, and to me it seems it’s a club. In the short time we have been here: 1. Tee boned at an intersection. Hot as shit, cop cracked his window about 1/2 inch sitting in the a\c when he got there with me burning up in the noon sun. The car left the scene but I had plates. I ID’d the driver. The entire police department did nothing. 2, First time car was keyed I was told I should not park on street. 3. Second time was told to get a camera. We knew who was doing the damage throughout the community. In a tip of a hat to community policing our neighborhood watch captain visited the family when the police did nothing. The keying stopped and they all moved away pretty soon after. Our guy was an retired E8 in the USMC. I should not have said ‘most". Just a lot more than I would like.
Andy and Barney policed a culture where the town drunk arrested himself. Things are more complicated these days.
