I never said it wasn't as talented as the '07 squad. In fact, I believe that to be the opposite. The most talented team we have seen to date was 2006, IMO, but I digress. My point was you can't rank a team by what that team did two years ago. Almost all of the starters from that 2007 team are gone, so you can't rank THIS set of kids on THEIR merit. That's all. I believe 100% that this team will go out there this year and earn that top ten ranking a lot of you are hoping for...but it would sit better with me if they were actually FORCED to earn it, because they did nothing last year to warrant anything higher than teens.
I think this season will be much improved. We lacked defense and I really think the new guy will make a world of difference. Our offense will not be worse, it will be better. Better offense + solid/strong defense = ass kicking. I also think there will be stronger leadership and an identity with this team. We will be good. I expect much more out of this team and will be disappointed with anything close to last season.
VY was 6' 5" and 235, JJ is 6' 4" and 220 last year. JJ hasn't shown he ability to be hit and keep moving, but maybe he will. But he doesn't look as strong as VY (who was as good as the best college football players). I have never seen anyone set sail as well as VY. He may not be fastest out of the blocks, but give him 15 yards to wind up his motor, and nobody would catch him. If JJ approaches 90% of VY's running ability, he will be a hell of a QB for . I was never sold on VY's arm, and JJ may pass him up there, but I need to see more, which is why I'm so looking forward to this season.
Then I misunderstood what you meant by, "this is in no way (starter wise) the same team as in 2007, or 2003 for that matter." I thought this to be refering to talent, not that the players from the 2007 team are all almost gone. I might have thought that was what you meant, but throwing in the 2003 team kinda throws me. Anyway, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Nebraska definitely isn't more talented but they will improve and they play in the Big 12 and I guess have a higher chance of finishing with a better record...?
They play in a weak Big 12 North and don't have enough quality players or depth to be a top 15 team. They may win OOC games and several within their division but I wouldn't expect much else. I think they'll probably be ranked a little lower (22-30) at the end of the season.
I'm going to go out on a limb and predict we'll be better than either of these two teams by year's end.
I will fall back on the infallible logic that when we have played La Tech this century, we brought home the bacon. Guess who is on the schedule again this year??
