Saw this in the Houston Chronicle, and I thought ya'll would enjoy, so enjoy! http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3546999.html Sounds like a young man who will make everyone in the state proud!
We are going to be so deep at running back the next few years. Especially if with we get K. Williams. We would be at least 7 deep at running back next year. Does anybody think they are going to switch him to LB? I think he might have more fun lining up behind our massive Dline and knocking the mess out of people. DJ Williams (Denver Bronco's LB) comes to mind. He was an outstanding RB in HS, and then he became a 1 st round draft pick at LB when Miami switched him to LB.:geauxtige
Right now? No. Scott and Murphy SHOULD redshirt--nothing against either one of them--they'll be GREAT Tiger running backs before their time is up. Next year we'll have: Alley Broussard RS-Jr. Justin Vincent, Sr. RJ Jackson, RS-Fresh Antonio Robinson, RS-Fresh There's no reason to NOT redshirt Scott and Murphy and if we get Keiland Williams, he's probably good enough to suit up as a true freshman--similar to Alley. Now, depending on what Alley does next season, and how productive he is, IF he leaves early, our depth chart could look like this: Keiland Williams, Soph RJ Jackson, RS-Soph Antonio Robinson, RS-Soph Charles Scott, RS-Fresh Richard Murphy, RS-Fresh ....and that's VERY similar talent-wise (and class-wise) to what we had in '03.
Huh? LB- Cutrera LB- Odom LB- Riley LB - Sheppard Also Danny McCray can play either S or LB as can ATL- Troy Giddens.
That's not very many when you consider who is left on the roster after Kuale and Vaughn leave. That will be the weakness of the defense and an opportunity to get the best athletes on the field, regardless of class. That's three spots that need filling with players as opposed to one at RB.
We're not lacking LB's....we're lacking EXPERIENCED LB's. Big difference. Next year, we'll have (by classification) BOLD indicates significant playing experience Italic indicates '06 commitment Dustin Adams, SR Darry Beckwith, RS-Fr. Jeremy Benton, Jr. Harry Coleman, RS-Fr. Domini Cooper, Jr. Coy Henderson, Jr. Ali Highsmith, Jr. Quinn Johnson, Soph Micah Metrailer, Jr. Michael Ricks, Sr. Luke Sanders, Jr. Anthony Zehyoue, Jr. Jacob Cutrera Derrick Odom Perry Riley Kelvin Sheppard and potentially Danny McCray and Troy Giddens at LB as well--though both could easily be safeties....
We have 16 linebackers (and 18 if you want to consider Danny McCray and Troy Giddens OLB candidates). That's 5-deep at the WILL, MIKE and SAM positions. Getting MORE linebackers this class won't get us experience for 2006. We have LB's...we just don't have a lot of LB's that are ready to play (Harry Coleman, Quinn Johnson and Darry Beckwith are probably the only 3 players besides Highsmith and Sanders, currently on the roster, that have the ability to contribute next season and none are true MLB's). Cutrera, Odom and Sheppard have enough talent to contribute as true freshmen.
I'm curious as to how many of those are on scholly? Beckwith is the only one not in bold that I have heard mentioned even talented enough to start on an SEC defense now and Coleman will eventually get there.
My point was that we're thin at experience and thin in the number of players that are "starter-ready". Considering Scott isn't even listed/ranked as a LB in almost NONE of the scouting services, it leads me to believe that he's not capable of contributing as a LB for us; therefore, there's no sense in putting him at LB just for the sake of it.
