I'd like to take the brighter side approach to this article. At least GC realizes that his playcalling sucked and he plans on changing it. If that's the case, then lets get this new season started and see what happens next. If he really does plan to open the offense up and let JJ do his thing, then he won't hold back against a team like UNC in the season opener. If he does, then it'll be a long worrisome season. If they come out firing and the offense clicks, then the dead horse should be buried and not beaten anymore.
I know where you're coming from and it gets into a scary situtation if the OC doesn't want to change gameplans in the middle of the season to get productivity. It's like GC said, "you know, I'm not really sure what he can do, so lets not try anything fruitful."
I read it more to be like "after 2008 and all the picks, we decided to call games NOT to LOSE, vs. playing to win it." still UNACCEPTABLE and supposedly Billy Gonzales had to convince him to simplify the playbook, thank goodness for BG!
Yeah, I picked up on that, too. I guess my thing was they knew it was soft and they were gonna let it continue as to (like you said) not lose games via balls-out playcalling.
Years like last year weren't what got Chavis the "3rd and Chavis" moniker, it was years like '07 and '06. Opponent 3rd Down Conversion Pct. 2009 LSU -- 36.8% (#39 in NCAA) 2008 Tenn -- 37.1% (#44 in NCAA) 2007 Tenn -- 40.4% (#71 in NCAA) 2006 Tenn -- 41.2% (#86 in NCAA) 2005 Tenn -- 36.6% (#46 in NCAA) However, it is interesting that Glenn Guilbeau did write a whole article on the "3rd and Chavis" thing two weeks ago: LSU coach responds to 'Third and Chavis' tag | thenewsstar.com | The News Star I love Chavis' response: Chavis was asked at Media Day Tuesday about his defense getting off the field more expeditiously after third downs in 2010, and he was ready for it."I think that's a good point. You mentioned third down, and I always have these stats because I knew someone would ask me about third down today," Chavis said as he reached into his pocket for a sheet of paper as the throng of reporters laughed. "There was some John or Joe or Jack or Bill several years ago, and he couldn't find a lot to be critical of so he wanted to be critical of our third down production. So that's fine. And let me just tell you where we are, OK." Then Chavis proceeded to break down the stats, and of course he said he wants to improve.
Well in 2008, Tenn was ranked 3rd overall in total D.. I will take that. In 2005 Tenn was 6th. I will take that.. I would also tend to think that he didnt have the options for talent that he has now....
I had more of the mindset that GC was forcing JJ into GC's play style rather than even paying attention to what JJ was good or bad at. Still, he should have gotten a paycut for a 112th O....
