ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- Art Shell's second stint as coach of the Oakland Raiders ended after just one season, the franchise's worst in more than four decades.

Shell met with owner Al Davis on Thursday, and afterward the team announced that he would not return as coach for the final season of his contract.

"While Art will no longer serve as head coach, he and Mr. Davis have discussed and will continue to discuss opportunities for Art to remain a valued member of the Raider organization," the team said in a statement.

Shell's departure from the sideline marks the third coaching change for Davis in the past four years. Oakland has just a 15-49 record in that span, including a 2-14 mark this season that was the Raiders' worst since 1962.

When Shell was hired to replace Norv Turner last February, he vowed

Despite their record, this is still surprising. Has there ever been an NFL team that entered a season without a head coach? That might happen this year.

So you would bring back a coach who couldn't reign in key players like Moss and Porter, and who selected an OC that was totally in over his head some 12 years earlier, only to repeat the feat of utter failure this past season?

    It's rhetorical.

What a conundrum. The question is rhetorical, and it's a good thing because there is no answer. Pretty crappy options for the Raiders!

Now, consider this: Do they try to hire the QB magician Norm Chow, and draft the QB of their dreams? For Jamarcus' sake, I hope to hell not.

Chow is a great OC. Not sure what you're down on him. Look at how he developed an offense that allowed Vince to succeed, with absolutely no receivers to throw to. Pretty incredible.

I think Mike Martz may be the one chosen. But I don't see Martz being much of a disciplinarion, something the Raiders definitely need. But Martz does like to stretch the field, which Al Davis drools over (he literally drools at his age).

Oh, I'm not down on Chow at all. I meant QB magician as a compliment, and I hope to hell that Russell doesn't end up at Oakland, given CTK's post.

Martz is such an interesting candidate. Part of me would love to see him in Miami.
